Why is it that whenever anyone asks for advice regarding an upgrade...

... and they give a budget (say, $100), some schmuck always posts this brilliant suggestion of a product that costs multiple times the specified budget? It drives me insane!

Happens a lot with speakers. Somebody will ask for a suggestion regarding a purchase. Inevitably somebody will suggest speakers that cost at least double.

Or even worse yet, will suggest getting a high-end amp and speakers in the range of close to $1000. What's up with all the people suggesting high-end electronics like that? I personally wouldn't want an amp and home speakers on my desk. And I'm guessing the person asking for advice doesn't want them on his/her desk either.

C'mon guys, you aren't doing anyone any favors.

<< I say buy the $2000 speakers. >>

it would appear that Renob doesn't have any speakers if you look at his signature! :D

This is a pet peeve of mine, too. I see this happening again and again.

Post: "I have a Celeron 566. What's the best PIII I should upgrade to and how well do they overclock."

Answer: "Get a Tbird, dude!"

or

Post: "I've got $200 to spend and am looking to upgrade."

Answer: "Get the 9ghz Pentathlon and a Whozit Via 815 mobo. It'll only run ya $300."

well...some people are schmucks!!! but to give some people the benefit of the doubt, sometimes they might be pointing out that the proposed budget isn't enough to get what they really want, i.e. if you are only going to spend $X amount on a given part, it's not worth it unless you spent $XYZ and get a better part.

Well, if they are suggesting something that's like 20% more, that's no big deal. But I see lots of times when people make suggestions that are multiple times more expensive.

And don't forget, that many things are relative to the upgrade. For instance, if someone is using generic 2-piece speakers, than a $100 set will do wonders for them. Sure, maybe not as much of an impact as a $2000 home theatre... So, while person 'A' might not be happy with $100 PC speakers, person 'B' would be ecstatic.

It just annoys me when someone makes a suggestion that is far beyond what the person is looking for. Over if someone has an existing board that'll take a P3 and someone suggests going with a T-Bird despite the fact they'd have to buy a whole new mobo and processor.
If their suggestion is only a bit higher than the stated budget it doesnt bother me though.

Many times people who have the latest, greatest, most expensive devices (regardless of genre) do so in self indulgence to an ego driven desire to lead others. They buy according to what would impress others and therefore influence others to admire/follow 'item-owner'.

The SIE (self indulging egomaniac) is compelled to counsel others in such a manner that reflects this need to lead. That is why the SIE will suggest items that would lead the other person astray of that person's own desires and criteria.

Many other times it is just lack of consideration.

Sometimes it's a boring afternoon with not much else to do.

I am with you all the way, Wingnut. I also find it a waste of time reading the responses to "which Geforce 2 MX should I get for under $100?" and the responses are get a Geforce 2 GTS for only $155, or get a DDR Radeon for only $130. While it may be that they feel that the upgrade is well worth the additional $30 to $55, it may well be that the poster's budget is ONLY $100!!
And of course the best bang for the buck Intel motherboard/processor questions which so many zealots must respond to with the classic: Abit K7 and Duron or you're a moron. Or the even more eloquent: "Celerons suck!!" Some people like and prefer the cheaper and possibly more durable (tougher to destroy with aborted heatsink/fan attachment) Celeron processor. That doesn't make them morons. They may be willing to sacrifice a little speed for more confident installation/compatibility. (People like me :) )
Hopefully more people will try to respond in constructive ways consistent with the questions being asked.

It's like when I posted awhile ago about getting either a Handspring Visor Deluxe or a Palm IIIxe ($250 each at that time), and some bozo came in and said I should buy a Jornada or iPaq (it was iPaq, $550 or something like that). Umm, hello?? I even stated that it was a budget purchase relying on $150 gift certificate.

It makes you wonder sometimes.

Yes I to loved that :)

And don't forget how many times the best speakers for under $100 are the Klipsch ProMedia's (and usually from people that have never heard anything else except the $10 plastic "powered speakers" that came with their PC).

I understand what you're saying Wingznut.. you bring up a good point, this doesn't only apply to questions regarding purchase price. I have asked questions regarding this or that and have had ppl reply with one sentence that only leaves me wanting to ask more.. if you aren't going to answer me, then don't.. (even though I've been guilty of that myself sometimes, only answering half a question, but I do it when nobody is replying and so on.. bump style).. about the purchase and budget questions.. when I do my shopping, I look at the most expensive thing first.. to get an understanding about the quality and features to look for in a lower priced model or product.. this enables me to make an educated purchase.. I don't just start looking at vid cards for 150 if I only have 150.. I look at the vid cards that are 500 (canadian) and figure out what it is that is driving the price and what to look for in a card that is 150.. so maybe sometimes it's just ppl sort of setting up a comparison.. but then.. maybe they should just say that and outline the performance/price and so on.. and then say.. so for your budget this one would be good cause compared to this million dollar card.. it has this.. or whatever.. </RAMBLE> </CONTRADICTING MYSELF>

Wingz, I totally know what you're talking about. There always seems to be the ones that like to suggest the newest, most high end components regardless of what the original poster has stated as his/her budget. Yes, we all know that 21" Sony monitors are beautiful and that Klipsch Promedias will make you deaf before they distort, but the fact of the matter is that not all us are willing to spend that kind of money.

I'm a college student and eventhough I love upgrading and tweaking my computer, I also have to be very budget conscious about what I buy. Once, I asked what people's recommendations were for a good $100 speaker system, and I even specifically asked for people to not recommend the Klipsch since they were way out of my budget. Low and behold one person decides to say, "Klipsch Promedia all the way!".....what a moron.
