I don't particularly like starbucks coffee, but I think their espresso is excellent.

Tims is good, Second Cup is much better IMO! :D

I really can't stand Starbucks coffee, atleast up here we have lots of choices (Tims, Second Cup, Timothies, etc.)

I don't know how common Starbucks is in the US, but Tim's in Canada is ridiculously popular. Literally within a 5min drive from where i'm sitting right now, there are 8 Tims. My drive from home to work, whatever route i take, i will pass at least 4-5 Tims... and my drive is only 15mins. And these shops are booming.

The thing is, there aren't local coffee shops everywhere in the country. If you're in, say, Oklahoma City, Starbuck's is one place where you know you can get a solid cup of coffee. It's clearly not the BEST coffee around, but it's vastly superior to coffee at McDonald's or some crappy diner.

I'm sure it's worse out on the coasts, but around here in the midwest, it doesn't seem too bad. Around here, it's Walgreens. I swear, there's one every couple of blocks. I can count at least half a dozen within a mile or two of my house. Same goes for Waffle House, once you get below the Mason/Dixon :p

Dunno, but a sure sign of the apocalypse was when I saw a Starbucks establishment in Vienna. Ugh.

A tall ice skim mocha has very little to do with espresso.

Starbucks' espresso is some of the most insipid in the business. It's truly terrible. Their drinks are, as others have said, consistently ok and their coffee is better than average.

Customer Service + Happy Employees + Good Coffee + Pleasant Shop Ambiance = Worth the price...

Take today for example... I rolled over to Starbucks for breakfast, ordered two egg and cheese sandwiches and a green tea. The service was light speed, everyone smiled genuinely, I had a seat in a comfy plush chair, and read the newspaper while I waited... They called out my order and I went to pick it up.

Oops they only gave me one sandwich... they apologized profusely, made me the second sandwich while I relaxed in the chair sipped my tea and munched on the first sandwich. Before I was even close to being done with the first, out came the second... with a coupon for a free drink on my next visit.

I never even complained... they just took good care of me.

Well worth the price IMHO.

Fantastic marketing, it was originally a small shop in Seattle (maybe a small chain of a few stores in Seattle, I don't remember all of the specifics) that did not want to expand. They eventually got bought out by one of their former partners who has made all of the right decisions. They are definitely a case study in most business schools.

Location. They are always near barnes and nobles and other places where they can reel in customers.

It's become a trend to some people. A lot of coffee places are overpriced these days though. Doesn't matter where you go if you don't just get plain coffee.

I never really liked starbucks. Ive tried a few of their drinks and would never pay full price for any of it. (Got a 50 dollar gift certificate) I remember my friends girlfriend paying 3 bucks for a cup filled with whip cream and a little caramel O_O. Not my type of place.
