Why is it that people tend to be most tired during late afternoon?

I do nap from 230-315 during the lunch break 🙂 ... But I feel even more sleepy after that. They serve tea at 4. I feel much better after that. But I always sleep in the car (I donot drive).

turkey has the added reputation for containing the highest parts-per-million of the chemical tryptophan. That is the stuff that makes you sleepy, especially when you combine it with vast quantities of mashed potatoes and images of professional football being played on television. Tryptophan triggers a somnolent effect so powerful that I have been known to escape to a back bedroom and take a nap on a bed overflowing with guests' coats and jackets.
or maybe you're expending energy digesting food...

proabably the same reason that the day goes by slowest between those times too,.... lunch is over, coffee buzz gone, sugar from donuts out of your system as well

An overdose of simple sugars, if not used immediately through excercise, will actually end up making you feel tired instead. Eating a lunch high in simple carbohydrates will do that. That being said, when I was doing the Atkins thing (the real way, by the rules), I was still dead tired in the afternoons! Could be a thyroid problem, maybe.

There is an actual scientific reason that people are more tired during the day. If you start your day at 8:00 am, your peak energy is somewhere around 11am, then you get tired around mid day, when its hotest (think Africa). Then your body gets more energy around late day, when it starts to cool down, around 4-5pm, then slowly decreases till the body is sleeping (or dead)

An ideal sleep pattern would actually include 2 periods of sleep for every 24 hours: one 4-6 hour period, and another 1-2 hour period after 10-12 hours of wakefulness. Mexican culture has somewhat adapted to this pattern with their customary siestas.

I adopted that pattern last year in college. pretty much had 14 days a week, each consisting of 12 hours.

wake up at 8 go to class, sleep for 4 hours, wake up hang out with friends sleep 4 hours, repeat

I used to always get REALLY tired at 5.. Now it shifted to 7PM. I would sleep at around 7-8 everyday, and wake up at 12AM and not be able to fall back asleep until around 5-6AM

Yes there is a reason for this 3PM naptime syndrome. It all has to do with your exercise and diet. If you start exercising say about 3-5 times a week and change your diet this will not occur. The key to avoiding the 3PM naptime feeling is to eat about 5-6 small meals a day. Healthy snacks and foods in moderation help to keep your metabolism going. What happens is if you dont eat breakfast and then have coffee, you get a sugar rush which usually lasts you to lunch. Then at lunch you eat and feel good for a couple or hours, but if you overeat your body actually does not know what to do with all the extra fat and sugars you intake and so it stores them and does not use them for energy. The key basically is to keep your body going on food at all times of the day so you do not starve your body. Just changing your eating habits will help combat the problem. Try one day with skippng breakfast, eating a big lunch, and then dinner later on that night. The next day start with a small breakfast, a snack around 10am, then a small lunch around 12 or 1230, then another snack at around 3 then dinner say around 7. You will not believe how much energy you will have! Breakfast is the most important meal and HEALTHY snakcs not chocolate bars and potato chips are best! Hope that helps
