Why is it that people don't realize how much they need DVR's or Tivo's ??

Its one of those things people don't think they need, and then they have it, and now they can't live without it. Like a cell phone.

Because I have Netflix, which makes watching TV shows even more enjoyable. Watch whenever, no commercials, watch all of a series at once.

You can do that with a DVR. And if you have a Tivo HD or S3, you can even watch netflix on the tivo. Plus you don't have to wait until the show comes out on DVD, which on some networks means waiting 1.5 years.

I'm in no rush. A good show will still be good in 1.5 years right?

I guess, but good luck trying to talk to your friends about it who are 1.5 years ahead of you and possibly watching the new episodes already. Then there are certain shows where you are inevitably going to see a spoiler during that time (e.g. Sopranos when it was airing).

You assume that I have friends.

Myth TV is easy enough to set up these days if you go the Mythbuntu route. All you need is a couple hundred dollars in slightly dated computer hardware and a tuner card and you've got a goo SD tivo that will do all your hulu, youtube, playing your own files stuff.

If you buy more expensive hardware it'll do HD no problem, also.

And the only subscription you need is for the channel listings and it's super cheap, like 15 dollars a year or something.

What good t.v show can't be found online? (legally)

If it is worth watching the major networks play it on the internet.

My monthly service charge for any form of T.V: $0.00

Waste of money IMO.

there are an insane number of shows not found online....

I never even considered it before I started working a night shift... when I was working nights, though, I started missing all my regular tv shows because I'd be getting ready for work or whatever.

now I can't imagine living without some type of dvr... I get really annoyed when I'm at my parents house and I can't pause live tv to answer the phone or something.

I was running a box with beyondtv for awhile and while technically superior to my settop box, it was an eyesore in the living room and the noise was a major annoyance (especially with a dvr, which you really want running 24/7)

I haven't used it for a little while, but it was really terrible the last time I used it. Many shows not found, constant quality problems and disconnects, etc.

NEED DVR? No.

But, I will say, it's pretty nice.

We just added DVR to our Dish service about a month ago.

TiVo is awesome, but they aren't supported by direcTV anymore, so I had to get rid of mine. I kept my HD DirecTivo until the day they switched to mpeg4. Then I unplugged from the satellite input and kept watching the full run of Arrested Development that I had saved for like another month or so before I decided that I would rather use the 500GB drive in it for my computer instead 🙂 I still like the Tivo interface over any other DVR interface I've ever used and the controller's feminine, hourglass shape is the nicest remote controller I've ever held.

Still, not having a DVR is the dumbest shit I've ever heard in my life. What, you like watching TV on someone else's schedule? Fuck THAT noise... I watch what I want, when I want.

Welcome to 2009. 😀

meh...it's only because I have so many night classes this semester that I finally decided to do it...Don't want to miss Gray's Anatomy...😛

It's actually pretty nice being able to set the box to automatically record movies and stuff well in advance...and not have to worry about the VCR tape...😀

I lived for the last few years consuming very little television... and believe it or not, I only died twice. Maybe people don't realize how much they need DVRs because they have the silly notion that they can exist perfectly fine without television... Fools.

I want to build an HTPC that can do the same thing. I'm one of those "I don't watch TV" people so it'll rarely get used, but I just wanna do it. [/blog]

really. netflix ftw. i dont watch much on tv, soccer games on the weekends maybe

I moved and no longer have a DVR. Now I notice I watch a LOT less TV, but I like it that way. The only shows I'm following are 24 and Heroes and I download them (sometimes before they even air here on the West siide) in order to skip the commercials.

That's exactly what I did with TV and PC gaming both. Now that I watch less and play less PC games I enjoy both much more - more streamlined watching and much pickier about games I play. Funny how it works that way.
