Why is it that older ladies wear perfume that smells like formaldehyde and cheap vodka?

It gags me when I go to church and I just passed one of the VPs on the way into work that must have skipped a shower this morning and just doused herself in that stuff. No joke, there's a total difference in perfume that younger ladies wear and that stuff older women wear around here. Is it just regional or is this a nationwide problem?

It's because the bottle is 15 years old. All they get for gifts is perfume. They don't throw away anything.

Sense of smell dulls as you age. Old women use stanky perfume because they can't detect more subtle scents.

I used to work with a woman who was in her 50s who smelled like that all the time. Turns out she was trying to mask her drinking. She called me one day saying her company car wouldn't start and asked me to come pick her up. When I got there she was stone cold drunk and she could barely speak. I drove her home and then called my district manager. She was fired the next day.

I HATE the smell of cheap "old lady" perfume. Smells like something you'd get at Walgreens. There's a few of them at my work. Horrendous.

that being said, I hate when anyone wears any damn perfume or cologne. People aren't meant to have an order -- good or bad. They all offend my nostrils. Not to mention 99% of them trigger my allergies and make me sneeze all day.

Things were more primitive back when they were young. They didn't have the wide array of perfume we enjoy today. So they got used to powder-fresh and remain set in their ways. I don't know why manufacturers just don't cut production of that dowdy crap and do the world a favor. I guess there's still a market and they want the money.

**update** Ooops, that doesn't explain the heavy-handed application. I think the obvious answer is they are compensating for something - some bodily odor.

I still remember sitting behind a 40-something on public transit who smelled like fermented sugar or something.

There is a older woman at my work who puts it on so heavy you can smell it 30 min after she has been in the mail room. It's so bad you can taste it.

I was just thinking about this the other day. One of the VPs in my company has his disgusting perfume she wears every day. When I went to the gym this morning, there was another lady I walked by that slathered some nasty stuff that I had to run away from.

Why do younger women wear perfume that smells like a car air freshener?

Seriously though. I suppose a lot of the perfume has gone bad. Avon is freakin horrible.

LOL, I am old but I only use good oils from indie brands that younger women rave about. I favor foodie scents, smelling faintly of warm cookies works for me :)

Funny. As I get older, the only scents that really do it for me are those of food. I think there's some natural psychology going on there. It's no longer "exotic scents of the orient" that are likely to get my attention, and more "mint chocolate chip cookie dough" that will do it.

Love vanilla candles. I wish I could afford to fill my house with them.

If they wear the same thing all the time they get so used to it that it takes more and more for them to notice it. What the Febreze commercials call noseblind.
