I question the value of AA when the resolution gets to be UXGA or higher, honestly. You've got a point, of course. AF does definitely give a better visual experience at any resolution. AA, though, was invented a long time ago to deal with smoothing issues on VERY low-res monitors.
I would never gripe at someone because they wanted to spend $600 on a high-end graphics card to play their games. I also don't see the sense in someone plunking down money for two 6600GTs, plus the extra money for an SLI motherboard, if they could have a comparable or better single card for the price. However, buying a 6600GT is not stupid. It's by far the best value on the market right now for video cards-- with the nonexistent X800XL running a close second, if it shows up in the next three months. Buying an SLI motherboard is also not stupid; it provides a cheap upgrade path.
I just don't understand why everybody and their brother hates SLI. It's my really honest opinion that building your own computer is undergoing a boom right now, lots of newbies like me are putting together PCIe systems (many with SLI capability), and lots of people are envious, which is dumb. (Not you, nick-- but lots of people.) Sheesh, it's just a big game of leapfrog. Why give a rat's ass what someone else chooses to buy?
