Why is it that i have this weird "lock jaw" thing?

Ahh, i think it developed after a midnight snack 😛, but it's been getting annoying. It doesn't happen as frequently as it used to, but i get this strange locking feeling. My jaw doesn't lock up fully by any means, but it seems that i have to move it side to side in order to "dislodge" it. It's very hard to describe. Should i look to the doctor, or will this go away on its own?

<< TMJ >>

I hope that's some sort of abbreviated medical term and not some sick sexually suggestive acronym (i.e. DSL) 😉

My jaw has to dislocate itself to open. 🙂 Imagry is great, isn't it? My jaw will open to about an inch between my teeth, and then it'll have to snap to about 1.5 inches apart. I love when I'm just eating chewy things and it constantly snaps.

:Q I saw the word DISEASE and i nearly crapped in my pants! But this is a little bit reassuring:

<< "TMJ" as we know it runs the gamut from a clicking or popping jaw and mild discomfort to complete jaw dysfunction and severe and intractable pain. It is important to remember that the majority of TMJ patients experience temporary discomfort and gradually get better with or without treatment. >>

Compared to before, it's become much milder, and very infrequent, but i'm hoping that it'll completely go away. It's been about four months since i've stopped doing what i suspect to have caused this. I s'ppose only time will tell, but let's hope that time's in a good mood.

i got the same thing. i think i got it from playing high school football and getting tackled alot. i find it quite amusing sometimes. i usually get it when eating something in a repetitive way like chewy taffy or chips. best thing to do is chew on the opposite side of your mouth that experiences this lock jaw.

I have something similar that is a result of my braces. Instead of drawing my front teeth towards my molars, they pulled on the right side of my mouth and now the right side of my jaw will dislocate, usually when I'm eating, and it can take many minute to pop it back in. Also, whenever I chew, my jaw clicks quite loudly. The orthodontist tried to rectumfry this by having me wear rubber bands that were supposed to keep my jaw from displacing to the left, but this had the opposite effect: it completely dislocated my jaw. My condition has improved, however; my jaw rarely dislocates anymore, although the clicking is still present. Hopefully yours will fade away after time.

I had a TMJ problem a couple years ago, and it eventually was frequent/annoying/painful enough that I went and had minor surgery performed on it. Not sure exactly why I "got" it, but my mom had it as well so it may be genetic. After the operation (they knocked me out for 30-60mins i think) everything was much much improved.

If it gets bad having a little operation really helps... haven't had clicking/locking problems since.

isnt lockjaw one of the symptoms of rabies?

If it's TMJ the right Doctor/Dentist can often fix it without surgery.
Worked for me.

My jaw locks up if i tense my neck up alot, that usually involves trying to get a loose bolt off on my car. I sit there yanking on the wrench on my neck and jaw tighten, next thing i know i can't open it.

I think the only time it's a really big problem is either a) when it's severe enough that it's really painful, or b) if you're a female [or a male, I guess] and it happens when you're in the middle of fellatio. :Q Yes, that happens.. I guess it's fairly common.
