I'd also note that used prices can save you even more. Just scanning my local Craigslist ads, I see a lightly used Canon 5D for $1200 and a 24-105mm f/4L for $800. Yesterday I saw a 24-70 f/2.8L for $800. Used 40Ds are $600-$700, and new 50Ds are $1050-$1100.

Woot, it is up!

Son of a biscuit. I had my mind set on a 50D and great glass and now I am conflicted again! Argh.

I'd pick up an original 5D long before I would even consider a 50D.

In fact, check out this comparison between the 5D and 5D2. I see some subtle differences, but probably only things you would notice if you had your nose pressed up against a print.

Hmm, what don't you like about the 50D? I like the increased continuous shooting capabilities of the 50D. This will be my first DSLR but I have a lot of experience with photography (film and digital P&S). I really liked the idea of FF too.

It's not that I don't like the 50D, it's that I really like the 5D for its pure image quality.

The 5D, with its weaker AA filter and full frame sensor, will produce much cleaner images than the 50D. High ISO detail should be better as well on the 5D, despite the 50D having DIGIC IV.

Full frame also gives you that really narrow DOF, which is my preferred style of shooting.

But I could see why the faster AF and 6FPS of the 50D can come in handy for certain types of photography. And that 1.6x crop factor is nice if you shoot telephoto often (I don't).
