We posess these qualities, because at times they give an advantage to survival. If you out compete your opposition, you live to breed and pass on you genetic inheretance. Nothing more to see here folks. You can all go home now. Move along.

I thought I smelled something that smelled like rotting fish.

<< Also, nice is boring and most of us hate boring >>

LOL, I am 'nice' and have never been accused of being boring! In fact, I've been a bit too exciting and stimulating for some tastes. Being nice does not mean being milquetoast... I'm as wild a woman as any could handle but I still strive to be conscientious and caring. Howver, sometimes being "nice" is not being good at all. You can give your kids candy all day long because you are being 'nice' but really you are being stupid and indulgent. "Nice" is not really a good word for what we are really talking about, which is moral development....

Consider Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development.

You can strive to be a Nazi or you can look to the Ghandis and Mother Theresas of the world for your inspiration...

Some of us think that the really, truly boring people are the assholes, not the 'good guys'. Assholes are predictable, where it can be kind of exciting to see a nice person lose their composure. ;) After all, nice people struggle with the darker side of themselves, too.... the difference is, they have the mettle to overcome the baser drives.

A lot depends on how you define and understand power. Some see power as cruelty and brute strength while others see it as the ability to inspire the best in others.

nice is a lot of things... boring is not among them !!!!!

I get great pleasure out of being nice to people in my daily life and in being generous with those closest to me, that attitude has been returned to me 1,000 times over and goes a long way towards making daily life pleasant as opposed to mere existance .

<< But I guarantee that if humanity was rid of hate and anger towards each other then the world would become a much better place to live in >>

I had this quote by Orson Welles as my signature for a long while here:

"In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock!"

I must respectfully disagree. :)

<< Isla, you use the word I a lot. >>

I fear it was I who inspired nausea in Ornery. I am fairly certain of it since I recall a similar reponse to something I posted from him some weeks ago. Since I can't please everyone and I decided there wasn't much use in trying, I will just pay it no more mInd.

And now, I am inspired to see how many times I can use the word I in a post, thankyouverymuch SammySon!

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Ah, that felt good. ;)

:D :D :D

Because being nice gets boring after a while. So we get prickish. Then that gets boring after a while so we be nice again. Loopus Infinitus.

And remember, Evil will always Triumph because Good is Stupid.

because people don't think enough. and i don't mean "think" in that trite way that parents use when they say "you need to think about what you've done"... i mean really spend some time alone with themselves and *think*.

nice is ludicrous at best, you are living in a fantasy world wthere everyone is perfect, happy, no one die. called paradise right? wake up to the reality. ppl who are usually nice is because they want to use you and they can get really nasty once they are done using you :) smart people taking advantage of dumb people.
