If you make alcohol at home, the government doesn't recieve any taxes from it.

Making your own moonshine is in fact illegal. For commercial purposes, at least.

oddly enough, I think it's illegal in most places to destroy your own property, as silly as that may sound.

1. Danger of the home brewing process: it may just be your property but an explosion or fire is not necessarily going to only affect you. (If nothing else, your insurance company would probably be less than thrilled.)

2. Danger of the home brewing product: if you go sharing your result and a bunch of people go blind you've got all sorts of fun reprecussions.

I was talking about personal consumption. Commecrially, yes, it is illegal because government loses taxt revenue it generates from the sale of alchohol.

Making hard alcohol is NOT the same in the eyes of the government as homebrewing beer/wine. Some of you need to pay better attention to the actual question.

Keep in mind, home distilling is still illegal in the United States, although, generally, if you?re distilling spirits for your own use and not for profit the law will turn a blind eye.

Maybe it varies depending on the state.

Homebrewing is fine as long as you stay below a certain quantity and only go as high in alcohol content as yeast will allow you. Distilled spirits the government frowns upon because they don't get the tax money from them. Even if it's for personal consumption, they're still missing out on tax revenue, because you're not buying the vodka/rum/whatever (and paying the taxes) - you're making your own.
