Why is it hotter in my parent's basement than on the 2nd floor?

The basement is 75% below ground.

Shouldnt it be cooler?

Why isnt it?

edit:
not living in basement.. just visiting for the weekend. just noticed how hot it is when getting something out of storage.

Time to move out. Be sure to put some pants on before you leave the house, however.

I would have just lived with being perplexed at the strange anomaly rather than admitting that I lived in my parents basement.... in fact even if a door to another dimension appeared you still would not have heard a peep from me.

I'm going to ask about a dehumidifier being down there, which shouldn't be needed with central A/C, but they're probably running anyway.

that's strange, because when i did live with my mother, i lived in the basement and it was significantly cooler, even though the water heater was downstairs as well. i would say like 15-20 degrees cooler. of course i am 26, and haven't lived in my mom's basement for years, but i do remember the temperature difference.
