Why is it considered bad manners to....

Wear your hat indoors?

Why would anyone make a issue of it, if another simply wants to wear their hat because it keeps their head warm, is comforting, or simply just because.

What does ATOT think?

I think it stems back from a bajillion years ago, when it was respectful to remove your hat so that you look more sincere and sympathetic to a person? Or if you don't remove your hat it seems like you can't relax or some crap. Much akin to not taking off your jacket.

Wow, I've actually been thinking about starting this thread.

It's incredibly poor manners.

Depends on the location/event.

If it's just everyday...wearing it etc. Then I don't care.

If you wear it to go see a stage production, then that would be bad taste unless it's like a really nice stetson and it compliments your other clothes. Also inappropriate at weddings....so sometimes yes sometimes no.

Edit: The stetson should be taken off after seated though of course.

Just so many variables.

I have to wear a cap indoors... while at work at least. Otherwise, I never wear caps.

In NYC schools, you can't wear bandanas & hats because of the gang relations. Strangely enough, they don't seem to have much of a problem when the girls wear bandanas.

Ofcourse I believe there are certain situations where it is inappropriate, but just speaking in general I don't see anything wrong with it.

There's only three times where I can see it being in poor taste to wear a hat:

a. when the Star Spangled Banner is being played
b. At funerals or weddings
c. when your hat would obstruct the view of others (such as in a theatre)

As you can see, choices a - c can all be indoors or outdoors, so I see no reason to restrict hat-wearing to one or the other. It's just silly I think.

Because girls generally aren't in gangs?

It's bad manners to wear a cap or hat anywhere that military personnel can't wear their cover.

I completely agree, other than those situations, I just don't see anything wrong with it.

Why? You have a problem with someone shopping at WalMart wearing a hat?

it is a navy tradition to not wear your cover (hat) inside and especially not in the galley or a bar

so that is why it would seem wrong to me

I recall hearing once that the custom dates back to Mideval Europe or thereabouts. Hats were often an integral piece of one's armor. When one accepted the hospitality of a host, doffing your hat signified that you respected and trusted your host, that no harm would befall you. Consequently, the refusal to remove your hat was tantamount to saying that you were suspicious of your host's intent, or his ability to provide protection for those in his house.

Yes.

It's bad manners just like it's bad manners not to say "sir" and "ma'am", not to hold doors open for people, not to offer to carry things for women, not to abstain from cursing infront of women, not to stop when a flag is being lowered and raised, etc...

People, however, have forgotten about manners.

There are some instances where wearing a hat is inappropriate...but I don't think inside Walmart counts.

I never grew up saying "sir" and definitely not "ma'am." I do say sir when talking to my boss or customers, etc. I also only say ma'am when talking with a customer whose name I do not know, otherwise I will use their name.

It's more common in the south for people to say sir/ma'am to everyone.

I agree completely about holding doors, and I don't curse in front of anyone unless I know them and know they aren't offended by it.

But hats...I don't see it as bad manners to wear one or disrespectful unless in certain situations as outlined earlier.

I agree. Besides somewhere where formal dress is expected or when a hat would obstruct the vision of others, who really gives a fvck, it's just a hat.

I don't think anything inside Wal-mart counts. Clap for TPT, pregnant 12-year-olds, and people with one foot in the grave :cookie:
