Seriously, why is a joystick called that? And which genius came up with this name??

Please, no sick responses...i KNOW what some of you are thinking 😛

edit: oh...and when did this name come around?

Its funny that I was actually asking myself about that not so long ago 🙂

Im definitely following this thread.

Here are my guesses:
1) It was once a brand name (eg.. Kleenex, velcro, etc) that everyone just used to describe a product.
2) Translated from asian language (Super Happy Family Fun Hour)
3) Look, techy people in the 80's weren't exactly the get out and party types. It gave them joy.

Well... you take the joy and than you take the stick and well... crazy kids and their rap music. All the hippin and the hoppin. Not like the good ol' days with the jazz and the jello...

it gives joy to chicks without a man.. or a man if you swing that way............

hehe good question actually i have wondered myself.. but then again why is an xbox called xbox... thats 2 x's almos xxx trying to do some subliminal message? I THINK SO! 🙂

After a quick Google search, I turned up this PDF file which credits the term "joystick" to barnstorming pilots back in 1916. The term for the computer input device I am sure was derived from this original application.

on an aviation note: The term "the whole nine yards" was coined by pilots also. During WWII pilots in the South Pacific (and elsewhere) needed all the ammo that could possibly be loaded into the wing guns so they wouldn't run out in the middle of a dogfight. The guns held a 27 foot long belt of ammo. The pilots always insisted on "The Whole Nine Yards" and it's been around since.

why is a calculator called a calculator, why do they call headphones headphones. they are just names.

Ha. You try to make a point about the irrelevancy of names by choosing two items named precisely after functionality (calculator) and physicality (headphones)?

Wow, thats pretty dumb.

Seriously. I think the origin has something to do with pilots and male genital. I used to have a slang dictionary(I still do just don't know where about)
