Why is image scaling grayed out in ATI CCC?

Alright, this is starting to get on my nerves. In older driver revisions, you could set the scaling options at any time, which is logical. Recently though, you have to lower your resolution to a non native one before the options can even be changed, and then change back to native. What the heck is the logic behind this? It doesn't make any sense, and it's annoying to have to resize all my windows after changing resolution. Is there any way to make it so the option is always available?

What is the problem?

You just set it to 1:1 scaling once.

So you only have to lower your resolution once. Set the change. Click apply. Change resolution back and you are done.

This is how it looks like under Windows 7 and Cat 10.1. The option is still grayed out - it's been like that under Win7 since ATi started offering a driver for it. They explained back then that the option has been deactivated temporarily because there are some issues with it - seems they are still having problems, 3.5 months after Win7 went retail. Good thing I don't have to use this option...

EDIT: Well, setting it a lower one than both 1920 and 1200 (like 1440x900, 1600x1200 doesn't change anything) made the option available. Looks like a bug in CCC. Going back to 1920x1200 causes it to get grayed out again, like the OP said.

Yes.

The thing is, I find myself switching between 1:1 and maintain aspect ratio for different games, meaning I have to drop to a lower resolution every time. Not sure why they changed it to be like this when it was fine (not grayed out at full res) in the earlier drivers.

Ok I see...

What about creating a custom 4:3 resolution that takes up all your horizontal pixels und use that res? That way you got native res and 4:3 letterboxed.

as Qbah said, I guess ATI has some issue with it in Windows 7 since it's not grayed out for me in XP with Cat 10.1. you can give Win 7's XP mode and see what happens.

Don't have any options on your monitor? I have a pretty cheap LCD and I couldn't get that image scaling to work for the life of me in CCC either. Started messing with my monitor and it was right there after pushing a couple buttons.
