Why is HD suddenly acting strange?

My maxtor 40 gig at 7200 RPM has been acting a little wierd all of a sudden. It started making loading noises it didnt have before and also seems to be running slower. I just tried to defrag the drive but it says that chdsk is going to scan so i cant.
