Both pc's are windows 7 ultimate. One is my htpc. Both are in the same homegroup, file sharing is on, passwords off. Its sharing the user folder fine... but all I want to share is partition D and E which are my backup files and media files. I share them and it says "you do not have permission to access.. contact administrator blah blah.

So what box did I forget to uncheck?

Did you set the actual sharing of the folders in question?

Thanks Jack. That worked. You'd think sharing drive D and E would have worked and not have to share the files individually.

For security reasons the sharing of drives as a whole becomes harder and harder with every new release of the OS.

Well there's always \\computername\volumeletter$ as long as you have the administrator credentials of the target computer. Pretty certain you could just map that if you wanted to. I have the hidden administrative shares on my server 2003 file/print/streaming media server mapped in my win 7 Workstation. Haven't tried it from win 7 to win 7 but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work the same.

Security is the latest `omg' of the web. It's crept into your OS. People are worried about security of everything these days.

Anyways, I use Win 7 on several machines so that I can share between my Server, main system and my HTPC. Instead of use homegroup, or using the no password approach, etc, I find it's much easier and nicer to simply use a strict networking of required passwords approach. You simply create the same account on each of the systems. Then, set the system to not require a login/password when booting and when returning from sleep mode (google that if interested). Then when you share something amongst the systems, you simply set it's permission level for that login name. Done. All the machines will happily log in to each other. No passwords to type. And no one else can do it either in case you care about security of other machines getting on your network.

Very best,
