Why is FFVII so expensive?

For something that was big enough of a seller to be rereleased as "Greatest Hits" issue, Final Fantasy VII for the original Playstation is hard to come by for cheap. Looks like $30 is the minimum and minty copies go toward $50, $75, $100. Cripes.

I just bought a PS2 and have never owned anything Playstation before (I hate Sony) and FFVII is one old game I'd like to play. I bought GT3, MGS2 and GTA for $12 combined so my nose is out of joint to pony up the bucks for FF7.

That sucks, I was planning to get a PS2 just to play all of the FF games on it. I used to have a SNES and the FF series was my favorite.

I was thinking about just waiting until the PS3 is released though. Then I could pickup a PS2 for cheap and have access to a lot more games.

Yeah, I love the rpg genre but for some reason I never ended up purchasing it when it came out. I'll definitely pick up the remake.

Emulators are good enough to play any FF before X.

Oh, and VII and VIII have PC versions. But those are even more expensive then the PS1 copies...

Thought it was confirmed it was a demo only and a remake would NOT be happening. If I'm wrong... cool.

ePSXe ftw.

Are the ones after VIII even worth it? I have heard mixed opinions about X and X2.

Also I heard the PC versions were really buggy.

I might have to check out this emulator.

X2 = BLEAH!

X is worth playing IMHO...good graphics, fun spells and summons, the story is a little odd but still worth it.

I didn't like X much. But most people do. The PC versions were buggy for their time. But now, with modern hardware, you'll have no problems.

-Square Enix, in response.

In a move sure to surprise absolutely no one whatsoever, Square Enix had some choice words to share in response to the latest rumors regarding a possible Final Fantasy VII remake. The June 2006 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly stirred up plenty of speculation and "confirmation" talk after the magazine stated that a remake was in the works.

"Last year," the caption stated, "Square Enix teased everyone with what it called the 'FFVII PS3 tech demo.' Well, what do you know: This test case was really a sneak peek at a next-gen revival of the PS1 role-playing hit."

Square Enix denied the rumor as speculation: "Since the Final Fantasy VII tech demo at E3 2005, there have been a lot of rumors about the presentation hinting at an actual remake. While the June 2006 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly confirms the remake for release in 2007, Square Enix has never stated this." The company then followed up by reaffirming the development of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII for the Playstation 3, as well as Final Fantasy Agito XIII for mobile devices as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Project.

As more developments (or rumors) arise, be sure that RPGamer will be on the case.

According to wikipedia, FF7 has sold about 10 million copies worldwide. They've gotta hit the used market en masse eventually.
