Fatwa11et (the member) started here a few years ago and was a avid user until Anandtech stopped allowing coupons. At that point, Fatwa11et started his own website and started asking people to visit his forum. THe Mods didn't like this and at a point either banned him or he just left.

At that point, people started leaving this forum for Fatwa11et's. Eventually they had quite a good following to which alot of people visit. They allow coupons and other such deals. This is of course not allowed by Anandtech, so the mods probably banned the word to stop people referring others to it.

Thank you for the detailed, common-sense truth. I now know what the deal is. Bump for everyone else.

Sooooo... why aren't coupon codes allowed then? Some legality thing where you can't confirm that they're available to general public? And if that's the case, why is chunky money clip able to post them w/o repercussions?

I think Staples.com threatened to sue AT or something like that.

I personally don't mind, it takes away ANY liability from AT, besides anyone with a pea brain can go onto Google.com and search for Staples.com coupon codes bingo!

I like both sites and think that we should be able to say fatw4llet whenever we want to. I think that Anandtech is insecure that everyone is gonna leave their site and go to f4twallet... that's why they probably put restrictions on it.

We should have freedom of speech in these forums.

So, basically, what you guys are saying is that is not okay for one of us members to post coupon codes, or post links to coupon codes...but it is okay for the advertisements to contain links to coupon codes? I find this very entertaining...here are some links to coupon codes.

Coupon codes for everyone!!!!! (From a legitimate advertiser on Anandtech)

I thought it was because FW was doing the same/similar thing as our own HD forum, and so talking/linking to it was frowned upon.

oh, I remember the whole staples mess. Tons of people were upset when mods started deleting coupons left and right. I also remember the staples letter to AT. But you have to admit that staples coupons were fun. More like sitting in my dorm room and making a spreadsheet of staples coupons was fun :D.

Staples was asking for it though. Who has sequential coupon codes and still makes profit? I still have my MS natural keyboard that I bought using $50 off $50 ;).

Yea, the coupon codes can really hurt them, especially when you use it with a pricematch.

All I know is that FW must make a pretty penny from their affiliate links and the ads on their main site to pay for all their bandwidth.
Their forums are as busy as AT's yet they got rid of banner ads a long time ago.

ah yes those where the good 'ol days ;)

Also around the time of Fatwallet's "banning", AT stopped lettting "dealers" in the For Sale forums. Those people got pissed b/c they lost their "cash cow" and went to f@twallet so they could all complain together how they had some god given right to deal on AT and undercut the average joe. W/ the halting of dealers in F/S forums, the dealers also tried recruiting people to go to FW. That seemed to be one of the last straws and then after that.... POOF! No more FW. This was all around the time I first came here so I was still in my nubness, people should correct me if i'm wrong ;)

There is a moral legal issue about sharing coupon codes, strictly speaking many of the codes are intended for specific groups or customers, AT chose the "high ground" and banned their use to avoid possible legal issues.

IIRC, someone had figured out how to "forge" Staples coupon codes around the same time, & it was a huge mess...

Fatwallette revealed that it cost $20K to fight off Wal Mart's lawsuit over the unauthorized release of it's Black Friday Deals, can't imagine AT wants a piece of that type of action/expense/headache/liability.

Some over @ FW are pretty adamant about hating AT, the more reasonable of us just enjoy both websites:D

Actually, Staples had over 100 "Business Rewards" coupons (very similar to the dividends checks that they send out now) that were all in sequential order. So if you found out one number, you could easily find out the rest. Someone quickly figured this out, and we soon had a list of hundreds of dollars in coupons (many of which were stackable).

I still have my $300 copy of Windows 2000 Pro that I got for $7. :Q

Actually, no. Jugernot would be incorrect.

Smolek has it right. Jugernot has the origin of FW correct, but he's incorrect about the recent banning of FW. Originally, FW was banned for reasons irrelevant at this point. But the ban was removed. People posted "FW" in full without a problem. I even found the site by following a reference to FW here.

However, the reason FW was banned about a year and a half ago was because Tim intentionally and willfully violated the rules of AT. He allowed his members and encouraged them to engage in spamming. Whilst he had linking to other forums on his members' signature pretty much dissolved (i.e., not allowed on his site), he started this so-called contest to get AT members to post a link to FW in their sigs at AT. Well, it didn't stop there. Some FW members quickly opened accounts solely for providing a link to FW in their sigs. And others who hadn't posted at AT for ages, suddenly came out of the woods and bumped old threads where they had posted just so their sigs could be seen. Tim was aware of this but pretended as though it was none of his business, or as though he didn't see anything wrong with that. Keep in mind, links to other hot deals sites in FW members' sig was forbidden on his end.

Anyway, that's what made AT do the banning. He got a chance to defend himself but refused at first to accept the obvious. Later on he indirectly apologised, but this was after the banning had already happened.
