$6.49 for a domain :p... So you'll have to add another $1.50. For hosting PM me or RossMAN (iirc he is giving out accounts.

What kind of track record does google have? A blank one?.... They have never offered hosting before or email hosting for that matter. Microsoft has been offering hotmail for a long time. Has it never gone down? Same thing will be with gmail. It will be reliable (albiet it may be down once in a while) and will be free.

So, why do you want a gmail account? You think that if my server goes down for an hour one month something will happen, you'll lose a email? Or you want the ads in your email?

I'll vouch for Devioustrap and if you still want a "track record" ask rossman for an acct who I'm sure almost anyone on this board will vouch for. Say google decides to cancel its gmail in a year as it cost way more than they predicted. You allready swapped all your address to them. Naw you gotta swap back to another. Worse case scenario with devious trap he goes belly up and you move your domain to a new server. emails still the smae and your only down a day while your dns repropagates.

i have a domain and hosting. i'm not going to use gmail in the forseeable future. the track record google has is stable as all hell servers and the foresight to not go down for an hour a month. hotmail was actually pretty good before microsoft bought it. that's an ms issue. considering google just filed for their ipo and their posted profits look pretty damn good, yes, i would choose them over you.

You don't know how often google servers go down right now. They're site has a complex backend and it switches server very quickly.

With gmail this may be a bit harder to do but google will also problably set it up so that the email goes to a bunch of servers.

They don't put ads inside the E-mail, they put the ads off to the side, like the ad-bot here on ATOT.

Agreed, just because Google performs fast doesn't mean their email service will. Do you all think that gmail will reside on the same server that Google.com does?

No, I can't tell you how often they go down. What I do know if that you won't notice that its down. They cycle through a bunch of servers. Each time you go to google.com you get on a "random" server.

All servers, by their nature are rebooted once in a while for maintenance.

I just read another post about the gmail craze and I just don't get it. Why not get a Spymac account with the same space and more features? I just don't get it.

Who is spymac? Do they have the money to support that kind of infrastructure? What's their business model, will my account be forever?

Who wants spy in their email address, nevermind mac. It just reeks of publicity stunt on their part.

Spymac website

While I don't know their infrastructure nor their business model. (Have you seen Google's business model/infrastructure?) I have had my account with them and been pleased.

Who cares what is in your email address as long as it isn't profanity and it works.

I am just offering this option up to those who are about to blow a gasket to get a gmail account.

I have a domain email and gmail. I have my domain email forward to my gmail. gmail rocks because of the search and the interface is by far the best web mail client I've used. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry, but I'm lmao here.... just seems a little pointless to me to buy a domain and forward the email to a free email address (yes, I know you probably arent the only person who does this) To me that seems like not a very smart idea :p. There are plently of awesome interfaces that are avaliable for web mail if you have your own host.

Well.. My domain email is free too (1and1) and it doesn't allow me to install any sort of webmail piece. Since they are both free (with the exception of a $6 domain name), I can't really go wrong with this solution. And, to be honest, the interface of Gmail is still leaps and bounds better than any webmail solution I've used (Outlook web access, squirrelmail, hotmail, yahoo).

p.s. I also sold one of my invites for $90 on eBay yesterday to some dude who already had a Gmail account. He must think it is pretty cool as well...

Warez and porn, my friends. Warez and porn.
