<< but gaming, and hardware driver support not really, not yet anyway! Though Win2k will be my primary OS once I go dual CPU this weekend. >>

Pffif 😉 Win2k can handle my Xterminator Gamepad (yeah, the one with 200 buttons😛, thanks Gravis😉), my USB Logitech Formula Force Feedback steering wheel, GeForce, TV Card, and everything else.

If you have the supported hardware, there is no better gaming platform IMHO.

My Burner doesnt work with Win2K, at least I dont think it does.. No word on any support for it yet. That is the only thing holding me from Win2K..

Its an Iomega USB Zip650 CD. Anyone with any word on this?

I have been playing with Win ME for 2 days now. It's not bad and seems pretty stable overall. I can't say it's more stable then 98 as yet but the only crashes I have had were in of all places the control panel under networking trying change my network prots! Never had that with SE but otherwise it's been very stable running RC5 and my other apps at the same time. No way does it compair to Win 2k though which is rock stable and faster with 32 bit apps. My RC5 times in Win 2k even with some things running are faster than the same in ME. Some things in ME seem better like TCP/IP protocol for the internet. Someone said a few messages back it was from Win 2k. It does seem better and faster to me. I normally run 2k for most of my stuff but right now am trying ME to see how stable it is. I just want to see if ME is better than SE overall. If so I will keep it for some games and the few things that I can't run under Win 2k. 2k for the work on a computer that I do is so much more stable and faster. So far though overall ME for the people that don't want to go with NT or 2k seems better than SE in the little I have run it. 2 days is not really long enough to be sure how ME will hold up.

IDE CD-R drives use just the same basic drivers that all IDE CD-roms use. There is no reason why it shouldn't be working. What software are you using to burn?

I was running ME for a while... it sucked. I always got blue screens and all that. I went to W2K pro and i haven't looked back. I think if people have problems with W2K it's cause their pansie machines can't handle it.

From what I have read about ME, it has some nice things in it. I am going to try the upgrade. Its only $50. It supposedly has a very good software dvd player in it. So it sounds like it is worth the $50. 🙂

I see a few people saying that they got a lot of blue screens, when they tried WinME.

Was this some warez version, or something? Some sort of beta? Did you not do a clean install?

If any of the above are true, then your conclusions are not fair.

*Scratches head* Didn't he just say that it is USB? :Q

WinME is ok.. I like the networking in it better than 98. When I boot to it it seems to know how to dish out IP addresses to my internal network better than 98 did. Browsing on a cable modem is faster on ME than 98, but I'm sure I could have tweaked that myself.

I still love the stability of Windows 2000. I've been playing a lot of System SHock 2 lately. THe multiplayer is good but at times is not the most stable thing in the world. When the game craps out, my friend on 98 has to c-a-d to reboot and the other on WinME has to physically reset it. For me on 2000, it's a task manager kill and no reboot. Gotta love that. When games lock up I still get surprised to see the task manager when I cad.. I'm still used to getting pissed and having to turn the PC on and off again.

WinME is good if you're getting it for free or with a new PC, but I would never go out and buy it.

win ME is okay but its more like a scaled down version of win2k.has more support and features than win98 se.

I am not going to use it. It has no compelling features for me that i cannot already download.

I'm not, and won't. Win98SE runs my system with good enough stability. It has all the features and supports my hardware well enough.
I dislike Win ME, it does nothing Win98SE won't, and takes away native DOS mode (not used that often, but there is no good reason to remove it). It also has some features that to me are totally useless.
Just for fun lets visit Microsoft's 10 reasons to upgrade 🙂
Here's the real list
The headings are the proper ones, the text is mine.

1. Import and edit your home movies
Hrmm a TV-Tuner/video capture card doens't help me do this at all 🙂

2. Move your photo collection from a shoebox to the Web
Scanner and any image editting software in the world anyone? Or does WinME come with a software scanner?

3. Archive and index your favorite music
... Winamp playlists?

4. Protect your critical files
I hate the Windows folder protection in Win98, looks like it gets worse in ME.

5. Revert your computer back to normal
Hmmm keep all your junk files, so you can't make your system run clean!

6. Find the answers you need
Windows help was never very useful, and probably won't be now.

7. Use your computer to program your VCR and thermostat
Hrmm...what's that, I already have a remote control for my VCR?

8. Link your household?s computers
Doesn't win98SE have internet connection sharing already?

9. Contact friends and co-workers more efficiently than ever
One word: (well actually 3 letters 😀) ICQ

10. Take gaming to the next level
Sound like a tag line to you? Yeah me to....

I'm going to get WinME just so that the next time I need to reinstall, I won't have to bother downloading a whole bunch of updates.

I'm not worried about anything, except for the natural bloating. I heard you can remove Media Player 7, and put 6.4 on, so that's not a problem. not having DOS support could be a pain though, but you can get around it 😛. I'm looking forward to seeing what this updated OS can give me (it's the little things that make the difference, not the bloated extra programs like Media player etc).

Indiana University has signed a license agreement with MicroShaft and since I am a staff member I can buy any MicroShaft product(not games...I wish) for a mere $5 per CD. I will probably buy ME when the school get the first revision.

I have over a month on winme now. With my system did a full month of installing and unistalling half-ass written programs from shareware vendors and crap. The MS software can be installed and uninstalled without trouble, but its things from other companies that hosed it.

I just reinstalled it today, but 1 month on an install is good for me. Win98 was 2-3 weeks before it puked. Oh yeah and I am running WindowsMe without Windows Media Player 7 or Windows Movie Maker even installed. Yep, you just have to know what to do to not have them installed.

Just copy this stuff and paste in a file called setuppp.inf and copy the win9x directory off of the CD and place the setuppp.inf file in the directory with the install files. Install from that directory with the setup command. You can burn it off to a CD too. This will prevent WMP7 and WMM from being installed

WOW! That was a hell of a scroll trip!

Why I'm using ME?

I just like that cute little round recycle bin..........
but really, so far everything runs faster with ME. My system is flying and hell it's only $49.90 at Office Depot and you get ten crappy software titles for free!
Win 2K.....been there...done that...Got tired of crappy drivers and no drivers for hardware.

I was finally able to install the Windows ME update over my 98 installation. I posted a request in one of the MS newsgroups. I was advised to perform the installtion from the CD after booting my PC with the boot diskette -- this process worked successfully.

Windows ME is pretty good. The media player has a built-in graphic equalizer -- now I can fine-tune the music that I play on my computer. Hibernate isn't an option for me -- that is until I find a correction. There are some other good features, too.

Sorry for that scroll job everyone. But hey... it works.

Really it does prevent those two POS things from getting installed.

interesting.. but can't u just do that by using the add/remove programs thing?

forgot to add one more thing, WinME offers better USB usability over Windows 2K. 95 didn't have any (unless yuo updated to the extreme last patch, OSR2.5), 98 was ok with it, and I think ME just improves upon it. so many of the problems you had with USB in 98, might have been solved. probably not all (that's nearly impossible with such complex software).

I feel that Win2K is different then linux in this way:

it doesn't have support for all devices, because it is geared towards high end servers, etc. in other words, your hardware manufacturers SHOULDn't give a damn about it, just like they don't give a damn about Linux.

HOWEVER, Linux is trying to be used as a typical desktop OKS, and is actually garnering alot of support, not necessarily from the companies, but from the people using it. they are the ones who work on it. the more people that use EITHER win2k or Linux, the better support will come from other companies. therefor I propose that noone use Win2k (hehe.. j/k)!

also, Linux isn't necessarily so bloated (depends on what GUI u use).

so what does this mean? NFS4 and other that use win2K are like people who use Linux, except that they have an advantage in not having to know much to get it working 😛

Why do people keep throwing more money at MS in search of more stability and speed? How about a one time charge of $25. for a lean, fast, and stable Win98 which includes future upgrades? Try 98Lite Professional (I use the Micro install) and tailor windows to your liking and it even allows you to add back all the junk and bloatware if you find you miss it down the road.

I find it odd that so many people in these forums will push their hardware to such extremes but won't try a simple cheap fix for their 98OS woes. Go to myurl. I'm sure that Shane will refund your money if you're not happy with it. I do recommend a clean install as opposed to trying to fix an ongoing mess. It's not perfect but it's a helluva lot better than Microsoft's all-in-one bloated OS for the masses approach.

Super6

I'll take a look at 98 LITE. I'd like to see what it removes..

you could also go linux if you don't want to pay MS.. 🙂 it's a great experiance!

I tried 98 Lite ..what a nitemare.. maybe its better now or I didnt do something right. 🙁 I get a kick out of watching all this I hate win98/Me/w2k stuff.. I dont think MS cares which you like as long as its MS .. LOL I did notice my brother had more problems with WinME than I did... I used the retail release while he got the download from some site..perhaps free or stolen has its disadvantages. So far I have had a flawless experience with ME .. there is bound to be some problems with any new software I suppose. I would have tried W2K long ago but always when coming to this site I saw daily wails from those who had problems with it so I just decided to forget W2k.. For 49.00 Me is cheap considering you dont have to go to MS and download 50MB of updates after the install..for those on 56k modems that alone should be worth 49 bucks plus tax. 🙂
