Why is everyone getting Windows ME?

Yep, it sure is. ME is crap, and they're getting because the name is so cool and not many people has it yet. You know, it's just cool to have something like that. As cool as it is, Win2K is cooler.

Hey, I've had it for weeks and have been using it more than Win2K at home lately. Consequently, my Napster and warezing has increased over that time period. I try to keep those things from my pure (and, erm, borrowed) Win2K install. But, hey, I won an official copy of Win2K at work last week.

I haven?t a clue but when I hear about people rushing out to get the latest and greatest from M$ I remember the old saying, "Microsoft where quality is version 1.1"

Well, I always been happily behind what everyone else was buying - the "latest".

Personally, I think Win98SE is good enough for me (it's what Win 95 should have been - rather like a final edition with the bugs finally fixed). I suppose I will upgrade to Win 2K in one to three years.

I can't imagine ever getting the ME edition.

I've been running ME since a fresh install a few weeks ago. And when my new drive gets here tomorrow, I'm goin back to 98se. I have a piece of hardware that requires a driver update for ME (didn't I read somewhere that that would NOT be the case?) and it seems less stable than SE to me. Also, I'm quite disappointed in all the "training wheels" they built in. System Restore... PC Health... blah. Just make it go faster with less resources already, I'll add any fluff I want with 3rd party apps. So away it goes. I may consider 2K, but I have some reservations about driver issues. We'll see.

how bout.. screw em all and use win2k? hehe. neither win98se/me can touch the stability of win2k. it's simply amazing. my uptime w/o a reboot has gone for days and that's w/ a bunch of crap running AND a hotline server.. all one HD (yes, it's killing the HD, i know). Oh so stable 🙂

As good as 98SE/ME can be, 2000 can be better.

That's all we have to know. It's a much better and worthy upgrade from 98SE to 2K than to ME.

Well, consider me one of the foolish ones. I made a trip to Best Buy this evening to purchase Windows ME -- the updates CD. Problem is, I can't install it. So, I try Microsoft support and end up in the Windows ME queue -- with 100+ people in front of me and the wait time is more than one hour!! Damn, I hung up and booted into 98SE and here I am -- no issues at all.

I think Windows ME has lots of potential. Why? I'm interested in saving an image of my desktop to my hard drive which will allow me to power on my PC and be into my desktop within a few seconds. Plus, there are other *useful* features that I've read about.

I kind of hate to have to go through a full installation, but it's kind of looking that way -- especially if the wait times are longer than one hour -- and it's on my dime because MS doesn't use toll free numbers.

Ummmm, because I'm bored tinkering, tweaking, and squeezing every last ounce of performance out of Win98SE that I can. Time for some new "toys". I would have made the migration over to Win2k completely a while back except for lack of driver support for my ATI TV Wonder card....

I currently have 98 SE (OEM) installed. When running the Win ME updates CD, I get the following message: "Setup cannot continue because it has detected that versions of certain installation files are already being used by currently running programs or drivers. To have setup close all programs and restart your computer, click OK. Setup will continue when the computer restarts. Or, click Cancel to exit setup".

After my PC restarts, the setup routine doesn't continue as indicated. Plus, I've gone through several of their "suggestions" to continue the install such as: 1) Turning off my boot sector virus protection in the BIOS. 2) Disabling the DMA options on my hard drives and CDR. 3) Going to task manager and removing all but Systray and Explorer. 4) Booting with the "step by step" option to only pick a few necessary drivers. 5) Running the install from the hard drive instead of the CD.

All of these options have failed so far. I'm heading over to check out the Knowledge Base to see if MS explains this issue in further detail.

going from 98 to ME is like going from 95 to 98..

2K sucks cause it's too bloated! I won't be satisfied till they know how to program more efficiently. (cough NEVER cough). MS can't make a good OS, which is why I like Linux 😛

hmm, sorry to hear that wje... seems you have really done what you could have. i guess those 100+ people on the support line has their meaning....

Not again!! Don't make me have to hurt you 😉

I've been running WinME for about 8 weeks now, and I think it's superior to Win98. Especially the new (Win2k's) TCP/IP stack. My (cable) downloads have increased by a solid 25%.

I haven't had any problems with WinME, that I can think of.

This isn't to say that WinME is better than Win2k, as I've never used Win2k. But I don't really see a reason to.

Soccerman, you will have to wait for the stripped down home version of 2K then. I don't really see that it is so bloated compared to 9x and in any case it is faster. Sure they are both bloated compared to Linux but that just isn't an option for anything but a server or some other specialized function.

At some point in your life you will stop upgrading simply because an upgrade is made available. You reach Enlightenment. You only upgrade when you truly benefit. I am Enlightened now and it feels great! I don't need Win ME. If Win ME offered something more than a space-wasting restore feature, a dumbed down "user experience", and Media Slayer 7.0 then I might bite.

I really want to install Win 2K. But I'm waiting until game companies fully "support" that OS. Example: my next game will be BioWare's Baldur's Gate 2. They don't offically support Win 2K but say they've tested on it and it runs well. That's peachy but I want a commitment to support Win 2K before I plunge. In every game. Nuff said.

The only problem that I have with win2k is that it slows down my framerate in most games. Even 3dmark2000 went from 7000 to 4500. I'm experimenting around right now, and was told the directx 8 beta does wonderful things, but the only reason I really put win2k back on was for stability anyway. I got a ton of bsods with winme. Didn't seem any more stable than 98se, although it was more annoying with the networking and with the built in mediaplayer7, i hated that. Just my 2cents. BTW, i think it was faster than 98se but not enough for me to want to go up to it.

I remember a lot of people saying that about Win98! Now I hear poeple saying the same thing about WinMe, somethings never change! 😛

There are features in WinME, which are not available or only semi implementation is available in Win98SE; for example transferring of files are much easier to do in WinME then it is in Win98. The Networking protocol in WinME is also superior to that of Win98SE or any pervious version, the same way it is in Win2k also.
WinME uses a much friendlier user interface, and that?s what you pay for, at only $49.95 for the upgrade, it?s Microsoft?s cheapest OS ever, much less then what Win98 was when it first came out! It?s a small price to pay for a small upgrade.

Just ask yourself, is WinNT the same as Win2k? That should answer your question. If you're happy with Win98SE (like I am), then you really shouldn't upgrade to ME!

<< Win2k is MUCH better and it runs all my games perfectly >>

C-MON NFS4, you of all people should know not everyone is as lucky as you! I'll admit Win2k is not crap, it?s stability, but gaming, and hardware driver support not really, not yet anyway! Though Win2k will be my primary OS once I go dual CPU this weekend.
