Rah Borak rules:thumbsup:

Actually the only reason the Neocons support them is because of the Oil Pipeline that flows through the center of that country.

And why does the Left support them?

Beats me. I think they are no better than the Serbs.

You must live a pretty unique life when an oil shortage wouldnt impact it.

Yeah an armed conflict with Russia wouldn't cause that:roll:

Right, who'd need oil if we were obliterated because of the NeoCons reckless Foreign Policy.

Georgia screwed the pooch, thinking it could get away with "reintegrating its break-away province" while the world was supposedly focused on the Olympics. Incredibly stupid move.

Russia's over- reaction in occupying most of Georgia to humiliate Saakashvilli's government and reassert its hegemony over former Soviet states dissipated whatever sympathy-by-proxy they would have received for South Ossetia. Not as stupid, but still not smart.

Our government and presidential candidates see a need to support Georgia, despite their obvious culpability, to tell Russia we reject their hegemonic claims with regards to Ukraine, Belarus, etc. Not brilliant, but possibly necessary.

The Georgians acted recklessly, basically striking a match in a room reeking of gasoline fumes. Inspired by their neocon friends, no doubt.

South Ossetia is part of Georgia by Stalin's diktat decades ago, and apparently the Georgians haven't done a very good job of winning the hearts and minds of the Ossetians since Georgian independence.

Having said that, I'm not keen on either presidential candidate's views wrt Georgia, Ukraine, or Israel. Obama's promise of direct talks with our rivals and adversaries has to yield better results than the Bush Admin's "talk to the hand!" attitude, however...

Anybody who thinks that a McCain presidency would do things any differently than Bush has rocks for brains... or worse. Hell- his choice of foreign policy advisors reads like a who's who of those too nuts to advise Bush...

The left? You mean democrats? Probably because democrats and republicans are the same thing, both are whores to the banking system and large corporations.

McCain actually buys into that bullshit, unfortunately.

LOL, like Obama doesn't?

People actually think they are that different. The rabid lefties are going to get a big surprise when Obama doesnt grab our guns, pass 100% social healthcare, or take away 50% of the top earner's net worth and hand it to poor people.

Most of us lefties already know Obama has no plans to grab guns and 100% socialized health care would be tough right now. I do think he'll raise taxes in the upper brackets though.

Yeah, when McCain calls Iran evil, it's because he's a warmonger. When Obama says it, he's just doing it because he needs to be electable.

What does RP say? Lemme guess... Leave it up to the states?

You mean Georgia invading South Ossetia, an independent republic? Nothing at all wrong with that?

Independent republic? Bahahaha
Call it what you want. They may not be internationally recognized, but for all practical purposes they are an independent democracy.

If you are not recoginized. You are not independent.

Georgia blew it with Ossetia and Abkhazia in the late 80s and early 90s. They wanted Georgia for Georgians, they got it.

I never really researched the topic, but I ignorantly always though that Georgia is completely innocent and Russia is the big bad guy in this recent South Ossetian war. Only recently when I researched it more did I find out that Georgia first attacked South Ossetia, then Russia came in to help them since Russia sees them as an independent country.

So I'm wondering why the US is so pro Georgia in this issue? I'm guessing it comes down to oil, since there is oil in Georgia and the US doesn't want Russia to harm their "ally".

Very good,,,,but oil pipeline, or is it gas.

Right. Currently oil; gas pipe in the future.

The US made sure that the pipeline did NOT route through Russia.

The US and Israel had 2,000 military trainers in Georgia just before
Georgia attacked South Ossetia. The US wants to eventually put in NATO "defensive"
missile facilities on the edges of Russia. How would we feel if Russia put in "defensive"
missile facilities on the edges of America? Right, we'd see that as a threat and wouldn't allow it.

Russia helped South Ossetia as a way of saying: "We know what you're up to; don't f**k with us".

Bottom line: This is about resources (oil) and establishing military bases.
Same thing as Iraq, and what Bush is trying to do with Iran.

i think - Israel has a base in Georgia. they were using Georgia as a staging area for
an attack on Iran. part of Russia's military action was to destroy those weapons.

for sure - America has 'relations' with Georgia. not strong relations, just "boots on
the ground" - soldiers, State Department people which is another way of saying
the CIA and their own sub-contractors.

Russian society sounds fairly brutal. from the description of Dmitry Orlov, a Russian
ex-pat & programmer who does a good job describing life in Russia during the '90's,
after the Soviet Union broke up.

as far as "Why is everybody so pro Georgia", the media is pro-Georgia. Christian
churches have a prevalent "Russia is bad" theme as part of their theology.
