why is eating dogs despicable while eating other animals is not?

I've often wondered about this... What If I ate a dog? Obviously the repurcussions would be huge. People in this country have developed a loving relationship with dogs. They are 'man's best friend.' To suggest that someone kill a dog to eat it is outrageous to most people.

The same can be said about cats. Now, of course, in other countries where people do not have this 'man's best friend' conception about dogs, eating dogs is perfectly acceptable. To us, this is disgusting and outrageous.

Thus, I can completely understand eating dogs is shunned in America. Compared to commiting mass genocide on ants and other insects (pests) and crushing snails, etc. Killing dogs is far worse. Because not all living creatures are created equal. Insect's and mice's lives are worthless compared to larger mammals. But what about cows? Aren't cows large mammals?

My friend expressed to me the other great concern over the abuse and atrocities we as a society commit against cows. Cows are not like lions or tigers, they are not fierce and malicious. Killing and eating tigers should be okay-- they deserve it at least. Cows, on the other hand, are (for the msot part) benevolent (unless you piss them off) and hard working. For example, we make cows work the fields (hard labor), we constantly take their milk, we herd them around, we kill and eat them, we take their skin, the list goes on and on. Yet we do not feel any regret when we eat our hamburgers or wear our leather tennis shoes. Do we not feel sorry for these overworked animals? Have we not disrespected their existence enough?

Why is that? Why is eating a dog so wrong, but eating cows okay? Is there any logical justification to this? Or is it simply because dogs are cuter? Why do we as a society discriminate between species?

EDIT: Before I get flamed: I am not advocating that we eat dogs. I love dogs as much as anyone else. In fact, I had 7 cats prior to coming to college and it would pain me greatly to see any harm come to cats of any sort. It is because I exhibit the mentality I have described above that I am trying to understand why I feel this way. I also feel terribly sorry for cows. I just cant stop eating hamburgers. :(

Bingo EOT

edit: its all about perceptions instead of equality or fairness. We perceive dogs to be man's best friend, thus we can't eat them and think its wrong to.

I agree with you on the cows thing - they are gentle, likeable creatures. Different cows have distinct personalities - some cows are adventurous, some are clever and inquisitive, some are gentle and shy. There is always one cow in every hurd that is smarter than the rest - this is the cow that will work out how to undo the gate latch with her horns, and lead the others to fresh pasture when she decides the time is right. I grew up on a beef farm, which is why I don't eat meat. ;)

It's not the correct answer.

The correct answer is that, in general, predator mammals don't eat other predator mammals. There's something evolutionary about it, as other predators don't taste good to us while herbivores do.

Dogs are omnivores, like pigs, and are in fact closely related to pigs. Eating dogs is something that comes and goes depending on customs. For example, the Lewis & Clark expedition had a pet dog along (Lewis' Newfoundland named Seaman), but they also bought dogs to eat from the native American tribes. They even did this while encamped on the Pacific coast, much to the amusement of the local tribes, because most them did not like eating the local salmon.

Cattle are eaten because they lack any sort of individualistic attitude. Millenia of evolution has conditioned them to being eaten off one by one. So as long as the herd itself survives, who cares that Uncle Jim gotten eaten?

So your saying Americans don't eat predatory animals like dogs and cats? That we like eating herbivors like cows? But what about horses, why aren't we eating them?

And why is it that people in asia do eat dogs and cats? Even when they've got enough herbivors to eat? Are people in asia are just not predatory enough?

Sorry but I think 1st answer was correct.

Cows don't have horns genius. And what the hell is a hurd?

a hurd is a revolutionary kernel being developed by the GNU/ free software people. IT will eventually replace Torvald's 'linux' kernel.

a herd (in this context) is a group of cows.

I skipped my meds this morning, which possibly explains why I mixed the two up. :)

And yes, some cows do have horns. Altho many (most?) farmer will de-horn their cows/ calves to reduce chance of being skewered by an irritated cow.

And yes, some cows do have horns. How is this surprising?

Nevermind my last remark. Looks like you owned yourself after all, Jules.

To me, dogs seem to have more personality than cows or chickens or whatever. I wouldn't really have a problem eating cats, for example. :D
