... a nick name for Richard? I do not get it.
Or for that matter Bob for Robert, Bill for William.

Can you think of the reason behind these, also, other nicknames that just don't make sense.
 
Its short for Richard? That doesn't make any sense at all. My name is Josh and people call me Dick all the time.

Richard was shortened to Rich and Rick. Hundreds of years ago rhyming nicknames were in fashion, so Rick became Hick, Dick and a few others. Dick is the one that stuck.

I also knew a guy by the name of Richard Wood.

Both of them got a lot of shit back in high school.

 
There was a teacher (before my time) in my HS who's name was Richard Less. I'm sure he got shit when he was growing up or even behind his back since he was a a HS teacher.

I have a friend named Richard Akin.
In the Army, it's last name first, first name last.
He was known as Akin Dick.
