Why is conservative talk radio so popular?

At my job, I have the supposed luxury of helping out various rural farmers with their IT equipment. After several months on the job one thing has stuck out in particular - Rush/Hannity/etc playing on the office radio and requests to make FoxNews the homepage.

Now, my town (Fargo, ND) has a new conservative radio station - The Flag AM 1100. I don't know if it's true or not but it's apparently quite successful.

Why?

I listened for a few minutes in the car about how Obama is so far left he isn't even mainstream left. How coal power isn't bad and the "libs" are trying to hold back - followed by some Coal Companies advertisement. Then it continued to a host and a caller discussing how the Republican Party has left Bush in the dust and isn't defending him - I turned it off a this point.

There's obliviously some kind of fundamental difference between liberal and conservative but I don't understand why "Joe Schmoe" on the radio is trusted and a several-page article in NYT by an scholarly figure isn't believed. How rumors of Obama being a Muslim are spread and believed from a simple e-mail from a co-worker.

No wonder the rest of the world think we're idiots...

It's the whole 'Angry White Man' bit. That sustained emotional state of anger and outrage. It's a drug for some people.

Because us conservatives only have two right leaning conservative sources of information.

Fox News and talk radio.

The left has TONS of places to see their views express. Which is why there is no successful left leaning talk radio shows.

Conservative blow-hards need an echo chamber to escape the much-deserved onslaught their leadership receives from 95% of the media (at least during this election cycle, which seems to be a perfect storm against McCain).

It's a lot easier and more comforting to have your own, maybe ignorant views reinforced than to educate yourself to the issues. In fact, it's nearly impossible to truly educate yourself to the issues and the more you try, the more demoralizing it becomes.

That doesn't really make a lot of sense, since the "TONS of places" liberals can see their views expressed are nowhere near the liberal equivalent of conservative talk radio. In fact, there IS no liberal equivalent, just generally respected institutions that conservatives constantly blast as "liberally biased". Rather than turning to alternative sources of information, maybe you should try getting some views you can see expressed in more reasonable places than some far-right radio program or fake news organization. The fact that the right NEEDS alternative media doesn't say anything good about their views, if you ask me.

Yaknow, they don't discuss the joys of socialism or how McCain is a fascist on mainstream media.
But the political opposite of that is true on Fox News and talk radio, which is why the OMG-us-conservatives-are-teh-oppressed! like yours here are so ridiculous.
It's like the ultimate in irony whenever you guys play the victim card on this.

I listen to, but don't necessarily agree with right-wing talk show viewpoints....most of it is how it's delivered. It's entertaining. Left wing hosts bore me.

At one time, they were founding our country. What they've generally become is sad :(

You know... a bunch of liberals trying to explain why the conservatives like talk radio makes no sense. Especially when they disagree with the ONE conservative who is actually explaining why from personal first hand experience.

Brain washing is a powerful drug.

Go after the Corporations, CEOs and Murdock of these Corporations doing the brain washing, putting Rush & Hannity et all in the face and brain of the weak uneducated feeble minds of the Red Mental Recessive former Americans and see if the country is savable or not.

I suspect not, it appears too late.

Making the U.S. the once mighty and proud country it was until destroyed by "conservatives".

Pretty disgusting to see them proud of destroying the U.S. on a daily basis espeically in here.

Way to play the victim card. Congrats, you've become what you hate the most!

BTW, you forgot the following: You also have tons of conservative bloggers to read/cite here/forward to your buddies, you have the Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, New York Post to read, among others.

In short, you have tons of right-leaning media to select from and yet you still continue to bitch.

The conservative/Republican as some sort of "underdog" is the most perpetuated myth I've ever run into.

One other thought - I frequently, and I mean frequently listen to conservative AM talk and expose myself to conservative opinion via Fox News and other right-leaning press. I do it because I like to hear both sides of the story. How many conservatives can say the same thing?
