I always buy the grated cheese at Costco and a 5 pound bag is 12 bucks. but at Kroger a 5 pound bag of shredded cheese is 23.99. WTF? I also have a member ship at Restaurant Depot (wholesale for restaurants) and 5 pound bags of shredded cheese is 11 bucks.

block cheese is about the same difference in prices.

so WTF, thats a huge fucking markup.

I can get shredded for ~$3/pound, and block is only slightly more. All bets are off for boutique cheese, buy that's to be expected.

Redners(a regional grocer) always has shredded on sale, and block cheese I get from Aldi. Aldi also gets specialty cheeses on occasion, but I usually get those from Wegmans(spendy).

It's typical shredded cheese. Real cheese with a bit of cellulose. It's Kraft or functional equivalent. I'm not sure you can get pure cheese preshredded. It would clump up in the bag.

To reduce the fat population. Reduce fatties from fat. Cheese is fat. Fat is no good.

Are they getting it from California? The drought has probably lowered the supply of dairy products which caused the price to go up.

I've never understood why anyone would buy pre-grated or shredded cheese.

Cheese here has been pretty inexpensive when on sale. And for the last six months it's been continuously on sale at Kroger or Safeway for as little a $1 for 8oz packaged blocks. That's only $2 per lb. I bought a 32oz block of pepper jack just the other day for $3.49.

As for Costco vs. Kroger, I'm not sure why it surprises you Costco is cheaper for anything. Just comparing Walmart to Kroger, I buy things at Walmart for $1.58 to $1.98 that cost $2.99 to $3.59 at Kroger. I've seen things where the regular price is as little as 1/3 that of Kroger. The thing about the Krogers and Safeways is that they run a lot of sales and some extremely good deals can be had if you plumb their digital coupons and take advantage of their "Buy 4" or "Buy 10" sales. I just bought a carton of 18 large eggs today for 99 cents, which is crazy.
