Why is ATOT so conservative?

i have been on this board for about a year now, and noticed a slant toward right wing thinking. i didn't know racists, "religious" christians, and haters in general were so into computers.

Edit: yes, not all conservatives are hateful. but the underlining philosophy tends to lean toward seeing others as less of your equal.

Because this forum is a place where techies of all walks come to discuss stuff, and not strictly a political website, you get all varieties here. I think the posters here are about 1/3 moderate, 1/3 reaganites and 1/3 moonbats.

I dont notice a right slant any more than a left slant. If you talk enough negatively about conservatives you can expect them to resist your Left Wing Propaganda.

I guess you have this mindset that leads you to beleive that all conservatives are mindless idiots who do not know how to use a computer. Maybe you suffer from your own preconceived notions. Sometimes the silent Minority is not so silent.

It's just a matter of perspective. I find it to be the opposite. I find more hate from those who hate religion (and religious people) than the opposite.

Hmmm.. I've gotten the opposite impression.

Of course, if you're like Steeplerot, we're all racist and extreme right wingers.

It's not nearly as bad as some forums I've been on. Racing forums especially.

In general, for a computer forum, I find this to forum to be untypical conservative. Even still, on the whole, I find it to be roughly split down the middle with a slight lean towards liberal.
However, stupidity is very high on both sides.

I find that the conservative posts on AT tend to be shot down fast. I have found that, even if there may be more conservatives, many are friggen morons. (Seriously though, not insulting anyone here. I've just heard way to many idiots on ATOT raving on about how Bush is a genious.)

You invoked the name. I foresee a Chavez apologist thread coming soon.

As for the OP:

I have been reading here for about 3 years or so (only joined recently) and there is definitely a decent mix between liberal and conservatives, with a few extreme posters on each side of the fence.

And not all conservatives are "racists and haters in general" as you so conveniently implied.

i agree. although i think conersavatives represent the smallest percentage over all. Not too surprising, really....when you consider that the majority of people on these forums hold higher or advanced degrees :D

If you are speaking about "Off Topic" as opposed to P&N then what you might be seeing is people being outrageous to be outrageous.
In other words, the people on OT don't take politics as serious and therefore can make wild crazy and offensive comments and laugh while they do so, meanwhile MOST of us on P&N take this some what serious and are above outrageous type comments just to get a rise out of people.

BTW P&N ranges between slight to very liberal, depending on the topic.
Might say it is 1/3 left, 1/3 right and 1/3 middle of the road people who dislike Bush. Which is why most of us on the right see it as a very liberal board.

Quick note though. Considering Bush's approval ratings are 33% according to the latest USA Today poll... that would seem to be pretty representative of America wouldn't it? Liberal my ass.

If the polls are any indication, AT leans to the left.

And OP, thanks for the love - "I didn't know racists, "religious" christians, and haters in general were so into computers."

I think a lot depends on your perspective. I consider myself very conservative... I've been a stay at home mom, I have a very traditional, community oriented job, and I stay out of (and away from) 'trouble'.

But my faith has taught me that it isn't right to judge others (no one is perfect, and no one knows the mind of God, or even what God is) and that one of the most important things we could ever do is take care of the planet so that our grandchildren can enjoy it.

A lot of people here think I'm a tree hugging liberal. I think it is just a matter of having your priorities straight. *shrug*

I tend to agree with how you view ATOT, but I find it interesting that being outrageous for the sake of being outrageous would produce more conservative sounding comments. I guess if you're goal is to sound like a big jackass, acting like a conservative is the way to go ;)

Seriously, this isn't an indictment of conservatives in general, I just find it interesting how much easier it seems to be to be a conservative jackass than a liberal one. And by the same token, it's a hell of a lot easier to come off like a liberal moonbat than a conservative one. Think about all the well known talking heads, or the most liberal/conservative folks on AT. The conservatives tend to come off like jackasses, and the liberals tend to come off like moonbats. It's really quite an interesting phenomenon :D

Bush approval ratings? I'm among that 66% who do not like him. You need a new mold to stereotype.

I don't think the board is conservative.
I think that some of the members that post a lot here are, so your more likely to come across one of their posts I guess.

And I'm not conservative.
I'd probably be a moderate liberal (maybe a little more then moderate, but not insane)

What are you talking about?

All I said there was that ProfJohn said that 1/3 of the board was liberal, and 1/3 was moderates that didn't like bush... and that made the board liberal. By pointing out that approximately 66% of the country doesn't like bush as well, the board in that respect is generally representative of the US population. Therefore it's not liberal, at least not because of that. Simple.

I had poll in ATOT a while ago about evolution, and the results were pretty conclusive: one out of every five people there is certifiably retarded.
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=38&threadid=2001646&enterthread=y

The good news that this number is half of the general US population... and the bad news is that the US population is twice as retarded as ATOT :

Anyway, to answer your question: ATOT gives you a somewhat decent cross section of society, since being into computers doesn't really mean you're smarter, more progressive, more liberal etc.

There is a difference between ignorance (which these people in your poll are), and stupidity (which you are for claiming they are retarded).

A lot of them are go-getters and motivated people. They've "grown up" and understand and made the shift to conservative.

It's still very young though so still very liberal. Go to another board where the majority are adults and you'll see it split right down the middle, possible leaning more towards conservative.

hehe. Your post is pure genius! I would assume it's some sort of satire considering you misspelled a word we all learned in second grade.
