Why is AMD better than Intel?

I am doing a speech on Tuesday, and it's supposed to be persuasive (it's for my speech class). So I've decided to do it on why AMD is better than Intel. I know mostly what I'm going to put, but any suggestions would be GREAT!! If you view this, just throw down a post at the bottom. 10,000 minds are better than one!

P.S. THANKS!!

don't bother, unless everybody in your class is a computer geek. Find another subject to talk about.

I am going to have to direct you here for the most recent discussion I have had pertaining to this question and then maybe they will direct you there and then someone else will tell you to UTSE. You know Use The Search Engine. This topic is a flame bait question if there ever was one and I am sure you could right your paper with the many flames that have been spewed forth after a good search. I avoid this topic like the plague usually cause I figure having a stroke probably ain't a good thing.

Well said. Again refer to my previous post.

See, that's the thing. I'm making it my duty to educate the world that there is another company other than Intel, and that you are not getting second rate computing when you purhcase an AMD product.
Thanks for the input though. I should say "Why AMD is just as good as Intel".

Oh boy here we go again. Damn my flamesuit is at the cleaners.

Umm we already knew that. We don't really need any educating on that particular subject.;)

DavemanUT if you do a search (as chemhaqr said) you will find plenty of useful points. Your thread title is tired.

Besides, any brand loyal Intel supporter will not reply to a question like that anyway. It would be futile.

Price vs performance. U get better performance w/ cheaper price.

Thats about it.

AMD Athlon XP:
Advantages:
-Cheaper
-Faster
-Supports DDR now
-Overclocks nicely
-Unlockable multiplier if you know what your doing

Disadvantages:
-No mboard support yet, for instant cpu throttling (cpu will roast to death if heatsink falls off or isn't attached properly)*
-Requires a more powerful power supply

INTEL Pentium 4:
Advantages:
-64bit processor (No 64 bit windows yet though)
-Higher memory bandwith
-Cpu will not burn up or even crash if heatsink falls off or isn't attached properly
-SSE2

Disadvantages:
-More Expensive
-Higher Memory Bandwith advantage lost due to huge latency.
-Inefficient 32 bit processing. (A 1.6ghz XP runs faster than a 2ghz P4)
-Has a pact with a bunch of losers called Rambus
-Requires a power supply and case that is p4 ready
-So-so overclocking capabilities

* - Supposedly AMD has a solution for this but it has yet to be implemented by mboard manufacturers.

There are AMD boards which support the thermal diode A7V266-E for one.

The power for a P4 is 320W isn't it? A Athlon is 300W, and uses a standard psu, unlike the p4.

The p4 is definitely not 64bit, the Itanium is.

No clue how much power a p4 needs. Think it only needs 300 watts. As for AMD XP's very few 300watt power supplies will work. Amd mostly reccomends 350+ watt power supplies.

As for the P4 my understanding is this is a hybrid 32/64 bit chip.

As for the A7V266-E, last I read it didn't have support for the thermal diode. :/

The P4 2GHz draws 106W at max and 76W on average. The AthlonXP 1800+ draws 66W max and fifty-something W on average.

The P4 is *not* a 64bit cpu, it is *not* a 32/64bit hybrid! 64bits has *no* relation to the P4.

Repeat the above as many times as you need to. :)

Celery 1.2@1.6GHz $108 on price watch

celery .13u @ 1GHz/133fsb = better performence than .18u PIII 1GHz /133fsb

so

celery .13u @ 1.6GHz about = to performence or better in some cases than 1.6GHz athy but price is about the same

Hmmm where did that big price/performence ratio go. Today it is pretty much gone. Tommorow may be different though;)

If you wonder how they got the .13u celery to 7.5 multi and 133 fsb, it was done with a engineering sample;) Its IPC was about right in the middle between a tualtin PIII and a cumine PIII. We all know the cumine PIII pretty much kept up with the old tbird but was slightly beaten in some cases. If you followed the thread above I showed in the synthetic benchies in sandra that my 1.6 celery beat the XP in the FPU bench in multimedia and won in the ALU segment of the cpu bench. The XP was at 1.6GHz as also the celery .13u. As for the enourmous amount of memory through put the Athy or PIV have compared to the i815. For some reason it doesn't seem to do the 1.6 PIV anygood. A 1.6 Celery would kill it in pretty much any bench you through at it and the ATHY with like 2 time the through put of the i815 you would think its performence would rape the celery too but it doesn't either.

I will admit the XP is a very nice chip but as for price/performence in comparison to the celery @1.6Ghz, today it just isn't there like it used to be.

huh? where are you getting this.

Since no celerons run at 133Mhz bus, its irrelevant (same with it being an engineering sample, and running at 1.6Ghz). Its like comparing the 183Mhz FSB of the XP to the p4, normal equipment doesn't do that. Since we are talking XP now, which has a massive performance boost over the Tbirds, your logic doesn't fly. There is no way a 133Mhz celeron can beat a 133MhzDDR bus of the XP. Ycan overclock XP aswell, but seems you "forgot" about that.

[BIG BITE]Okay I'll Bite[/BIG BITE]
Went and did my own little synthetic benchies under sandra.
Here is what I got with my celery at 1600MHz vs Toms review of a XP 1900+/1600MHz.

CPU bench.
celery @ 1.6
ALU 4502
FPU 2144

From TomsHW
XP @ 1.6
ALU 4472
FPU 2461
--------------------------------------------------------------
Multimedia
celery @ 1.6
SSE 8729
FP SSE 10836

From Toms
XP @ 1.6
SSE 8920
FP SSE 10244

Now for the prices......

1.2 celery @ $108
ABIT ST6 @ $84
256mb cas2 SDRAM $15
equals= $207

Now the AMD 1600+,
XP 1600+/1.4GHz @ $111
FIC AD11 @ $91(cause anything less to me than a AMD 760 chipset isn't worth buying yet.)
256 mb pc2400 ddr cas2 @ $38
equals= $241
Hmmm, well it seems we have a little predicament here. Value vs' Performence. Seem quite equal if you ask me?

I also think the XP's are ending up around 1575MHz OC'd too usually.

Personally this is a good little spot I think for both companies as I would like everyone to go out and buy up these little celery gems to protest the marketing of the PIV.

Also maybe we will see a .13u T-bred sooner;)

Anyone with a XP @ 1600MHz/133fsb care to do the Pepsi challenge.

While I agree that the Celery is an excellent price/performance platform(you've convinced me to build one!) I'm unimpressed by it's memory bandwidth scores, although how this effects the "real world" performance in most apps will be answered when I build one ;)

Well I guess if you want something with ultra high memory bandwith you could always get a PIV;) We all know how that performs right:D To me memory bandwith isn't everything. Some people buy the PIV simply becaue it has a 4 instead of a 3 in front of the pentium. OOOooooooooooooohhhh a P4. Must be awesome....Haha yeah whatever. The same goes for DDR. Just cause a board is using DDR doesn't mean a 1GHz ATHy is going to run like a 2GHz athy. I do understand that the DDR KT266a boards are the champs in alot of stuff right now similar to the way the BX was with SDRAM but it is nothing to cream your pants over;)

You should check this thread if you haven't yet;)

Here

Specifically look for a phillipine made chip if you can do it. If you check the links above and the weeks the top OCr's are then you will get a idea of what to shoot for. O yeah and hey if you get tired of that celery 1.2 and it is a good OC'r then you can send it my way;)
