Why is a shower considered an upgrade in a house?

When I bought my house, both bathrooms had tubs, but the stand up shower thing was an upgrade. Why is that? Shouldn't a tub be more expensive? Just because it is sold more?

Do you guys actually take "baths"?
 
The last time I took a bath was because the shower wasn't working. I hate the tub/shower combos cause they're really ugly. I'd rather have a tub and a separate shower.
