Why is a 5speed considered to be better than a 6spd again?

I prefer the 6 as well.. 6 gear on most of them is a highway gear (OD) that leaves 5 other gears for close ratio... where a 5 speed only has 4 and a OD gear...
better performance with 5 super close ratio fwd gears as opposed to 4...
you never count top gear as a performance gear except for top speed runs...
