ok, i'm about to drive from DC to NC and i'm thirsty. i stop at the market to get a coke. at the checkout isle, there's a refrigerated glass case of 20oz coke for $1. i was going to grab one. then i saw the flyer for $0.99 2 liter coke.

sure it's not cold, but it doesnt matter to me. 3x more coke for the same price

so people are paying $1 for 3x less product just because it's cold???

Do you really want to walk around with a 2 liter bottle of soda?

Paying for convenience I'd imagine.

some people buy a 591mL instead of 2L because drinking out of a 2L looks too ghetto

That's how coke/pepsi makes big money. At school vending machines such coke bottles (655ml) cost $1.50 and cans $1.00. You can buy a 2 Litre Bottle for $.99

it is called impulse buying...
a marketing ploy...
just like you buying a pound of lunch meat that is prepackaged. you can goto the deli case and get it fresh cut for way less.

Be glad you didn't stop at a store where the 20 oz. Coke was $1.39 - like I paid the other day. In the end, you'll do much better by paying $1.00 and only consuming 20 oz. of soda vs. the whole 2 liter bottle - I'm talking about "heath wise."

Actually, you're the same "health wise" (and better monetarily) if you buy the 2 litre and throw all but 20 ounces away. ;)

Most gas stations around here sell cold 2 liter bottles right under the 20oz bottles...

2 liter - $1.09
20oz - $1.39

At my work we have 20oz bottels at 1.39.... we don't sell cold 2L but we have 1/2 gal of ice tea for 1.49. So why do most people get the 20oz bottle? Because they've been marketed to. We can get away with charging this price and you're all stupid (I mean people in general) enough to pay more. I think its a pretty smart idea on the side of distribution, if the consumers stopped buying then they'd drop the prices, but since yall are willing to pay more why change?

I've also read that the brands are setting the high prices on the 20oz size not the stores. Obviously the price will vary but that explains why there is such a huge difference. I definately agree with the convenience factor.

1 gallon = 128 ounces (roughly 6 of the $0.99 cola)

That makes cola around $6/gallon, quite a bit more than gasoline. Think about that next time you fill up with gas...

(the only deal worse is water at the same price, lmao)

You know, when you think about it.. Soft Drinks are more expensive than gasoline in some cases.

Not only that, go find a 1liter coke (I had to get one for an experiment because it was the perfect size) and it was almost $2:confused:

I imagine both...but favor the retailer
Think of it this way. When you shop for soda in a supermarket, one row of soda bottles gives shoprite 1 million, now figure, to cover twice the amount of space on the wall they need to buy 2 rows...so they prolly get cut a deal yet still make over 1 mil for the same amount of wall space. But since they often have to stock much less of the 20oz that they do of the 2L(they don't go as far back and fridges aren't as deep) they prolly won't receive a very large volume discount to actually buying the bottles...so Coca cola makes out there. .

Yep. It's called convenience.

2 liter is more convenient. I consider having to go back to the store because the 20oz is gone in 30s to be pretty inconvenient!

Wow, you can get bottle water at the same price as coke?
We have plenty of water here in Canada & the price of convenience size bottle range from 1.3~2X of coke.

My in house active carbon/reverse RO water filtration system cost me about $80.00 CAD per year that filter everything down to 0.003 micron, and also strip all chemical including chlorine down to 0.09 part per million. (Initial investment for the setup is $270.00 CAD)
It is well worth the price compare to purchasing ourageous bottle water at the store. It work out to be about $0.10 CAD ($0.065 USD)per US gallon.
