Why is 1920x1200 being abandoned in the mobile market?

I miss 1920x1200 on a 15.4" display!
Now even the 17" displays are 1920x1080. Some are even 1600x900! On a 17"! 🙄

Gotta be more than that. It seems like even desktop displays are going to 16:9 now to match TV. It's ridiculous. 🙄

You know how awesome it would be to have a 2560x1600 display of 16-17" on a portable computer? The video cards can handle it. (for pro apps)

I don't. I've got one in my Clevo M860TU and everything is too small. Maybe my eyesight is bad... must be too much pr0n. 😵

Anyone want to buy a Clevo M860TU with 15.4" 1920x1200 screen?

I'm nearsighted - 20/15 / 20/10 (L/R) so that's probably it! Heck I can see pixels at 30" away from this 3007 at 2560x1600. 😱

I tried a 40" 1920x1080 HDTV as a monitor and the dot pitch reminded me of some .41 DP 14" VGA screen from 1989. 😵

8730/8740w always been 1920x1200. most consumer products have moved to 16:9 which is very difficult to use in business/coding/etc. i love 16:10.

I'm nearsighted too, but pixels don't bother me. Maybe I just don't focus on them or something.

Or maybe my eyes ARE just getting worse? I could have sworn that your avatar looked different the other day.

Aren't some professional laptops still 1920x1200? Price is always the driving point as I remember somewhere that they can cut 2 more panels from each sheet by moving to 16:9. Just be thankful that you still have 16:10 on the high-end for monitors.

As for >1080p laptops, there are 2 (sorta).
The lenovo w701s (?) has a secondary foldout 1024x768 lcd in portrait mode.
The gscreen dual-display laptop has 2 1680x1050 and will eventually have dual 1920x1200 option.

the hp envy 15 does 1920x1080 in 15" - which is insane.

but then again we all know about the retina ipad 2 display 😉 that PPI is INSANE!

Agreed. My every day monitor is a 23", 1920x1080 NEC EA231WMi. From about 2-3 feet away, I can't see the pixels, but I also wouldn't mind it being a bit sharper (higher dot pitch). Mounted on the wall above it, I have a 42" Panasonic 1080P Plasma, about 4-5 feet from me total. The dot pitch on that thing drives me insane; I can see pixels clear as day. It works well for watching movies across the room, though.

Sony Z series has 1080p in a 13.1" screen. And now that blu ray is cheap, where are the portable 1080p 7 and 8 inch blu ray players?

Windows Vista / 7 tend to handle the UI size vs. screen size vs. resolution much better than Xp did.

I picked up a 26" Samsung 1900x1200 monitor last year when I built my current system. Can't seem to find them anywhere now though.

It's crazy, I bought my 23.5" Samsung monitor for $170 and it does 2048x1152
Today, even monitors double that price are at 1080p, and even larger screens too. It's too bad.

2048x1152 is still 16:9. They just upped the resolution so the screen can fit 2 letter size documents for office work. Most of the Dell Precision series still has 19x12.

it would annoy the hell out of me, thats a lot of pixels crammed into a small area.

itd be nice to see it more widely available on large monitors, even most of those are just stuck at 1080p now, which isnt bad, but i definitely wouldnt mind a higher res sometimes.

Yeah, I just got a new Dell XPS 15 with one of those 1920x1080 screens....I'd rather it be 1920x1200 and deal with any bars while playing movies.

I think it's more about dumb moronic users expectations and complaints about bars and then them thinking it's not a "real" HD display if it has bars.

I'd rather have the extra 120 pixels in height for working with photos or coding or such.

On the bright side - that display on the XPS is supposedly really freaking good.

More pixels is better. With a proper hardware scaler using lower resolutions is like using a CRT. Look at the display on the iphone 4! I would love to have a 40" display with that pixel density! Too bad it would cost a couple hundred kilobucks. 😱

On a semi-related note, there are rumors that the iPad 2 could have a 2048x1536 screen resolution. This would be a doubling in horizontal and vertical resolution from the current model, which is exactly what Apple did when they went from iPhone 3 -> 4.

That would be great for jump users. (RDP) I would buy immediately based on that specification alone. 1024x768 is so 1999. 😉

I'm nearsighted also...but you need a poke in both eyes. I'm 20/30, 20/30. Blind as a bat.

Bats can see quite well contrary to common belief. Of course they depend on their echolocation for hunting their dinner at dusk. 😉

This thread is supposed to address the loss of 1920x1200 pixels in the MOBILE market. Folks - that means notebooks, netbooks, and tablets - not big desktop scenarios. Rubycon . . . you are right about the bats. 🙂
