Why In the Hell Do Mobos still have more than Two PCI slots

It makes no sense. You can't even use half of them. They take up uneccessary space. For example, on my Chaintech VNF4 Ultra, the power connector is in the middle of the mobo instead of on the edge which is kind of annoying since I have to run the cable across the mobo which inteferes with cooling. If some of the PCI slots were removed, like the one next to the PCIe x 16, they could have rearraged some stuff to allow the power connector to be on the edge. If you use more than two PCI connector on an NForce4 board, then you're getting ripped off in one way or another.

Cause some people are not you and have more than 2 PCI cards???

Just because you didn't research the motherboard well and find out if it had a good layout, don't mean they all should just have 2 PCI slots.

Go moan to Chaintech.

It's called "Micro-ATX". Buy one... you'll be pleased. Cheap Compaq's and HP's are also notorious for having no more then two PCI slots. There's tons of crappy MBs with two or three PCI slots, so what's your complaint?

For the power users who do use assorted add-in cards, they get full ATX MBs.

Research before you buy. Get what you want, and let others get what they want. There's enough MB's out there to suit everyone's fancy.

The power connector is probably in that location for a reason. If you were to take out those PCI slots what would you put in their place? You want the vid card, memory, cpu, and chipset fairly close together. I'm guessing the power connector is there so that the PCI E can get enough clean power. If you look at the A8N-SLI it has a molex connector next to the vid card for this very reason.

Oh please, STFU, I'm pretty damn satisfied with my board because I don't need to use more than one PCI slot. This isn't a bitch about why my mobo sucks, I'm just wondering why PCIe motherboards need more than two PCI slots when about half are unusable in the first place. My question is why don't they just remove the PCI slot if the videocard is going to end up obstructing it in the first place?

Reading comprehension, people. This isn't a bitch about the Chaintech board, I was just using it as an example. I'm very pleased with the board, but my main complaint is a general one. Why put a PCI connector on a motherboard when it's impossible to use it (e.g. next to the PCIe slot)? That space could be best used to put something else.

As other have said, sound, tv, raid card, wirewire, extra usb.... There are many ways you can fill those slots up, and many people do !

I need atleast 3....I have a RAID card, an Audigy 2 card, and a wireless NIC. Even with a PCI Express board I would still need at least 3 PCI slots untill I was able to get the PCIE versions.

Does your AGP/PCIe take up more than one slot? If not, then you're fortunate. But the high end boards that support high end videocards that take up two slots don't make sense. Are they expecting videocards to get smaller?

TV Tuner
Multimedia card
4 x USB card (ie one card with 4 USB ports on it)
2 x Firewaire card (as above)
Sound Card

Just get a dremel and cut the bottom section of your board off, problem solved.....

I don't think it has to. I'm just bringing to light a dilemma.

What dilemma ? You are the only one here with a problem or a "dilemma".....

So I'm the only one on these boards that notices that there are PCI slots on motherboards going to waste? I don't have a problem. I don't use more than one PCI card. My motherboard support 10 USB ports. But why make a PCI slot next to a PCIe slot when you know that current cards take up two slots. That's all I'm wondering. Obviously you don't give a sh*t. But with real-estate on ATX boards being in limited supply, you'd think that some of these motherboard makers would ditch the useless PCI slot(s) in favor of extra space for something else like...um, capacitors.

I disagree, Alot of video cards still take up only one slot. Only the High end cards like the 6800GT ULTRA and cards like those take up two. Besides more and more boards are leaving a space open for the larger video cards.

I'm sure most folks would want room for expansion, and given the fact that that PCI-E is relatively new, everyone would have a bunch of PCI cards they'd want to carry over to the rig that has PCI-E. I'm certainly one of those folks.

Looks like M-ATX will fir the bill perfectly for you.

This thread is about as intelligent as the "nVidia sucks because their 5500 series sucks" thread.

y r the motherboard companies supposed to change their motherboard layout just cus of the few like u that have a video card that takes up 2 pci slots. its not their fault ur video card took up two slots. its ur fault for bying a video card that took up 2 slots and not thinking that u might need that slot for something. dont blame them for something u did.
