why in the heck does my computer keep rebooting itself??

i built a celeron system running win2k on an abit se6 board with 256 megs of ram and a voodoo 3 3000 video card.

and the dedgum keeps rebooting itself whilst i'm doing stuff. i never get any virtual memory errors or really any errors at all...it just goes 'thump' and reboots itself.

what are some possible causes??

I had the exact same problem with Win2k and my Clery 300/a at 450 on my Abit BX6 board. Random reboots for no reason whatsoever. I had to go back to win98 for stability.

I finally went to a tbird system under win2k, and am loving it. With the price of chips now, it's a good time to upgrade. A chip, board, and AMD approved PS shouldn't run more then $300. I paid $90 for my a7v, $155 for my 1.3ghz, and $65 for a new case (and did a power supply shuffle cause my old case rocked). Overpaid on the case, got a steal on the board and chip.

The problem could be you're power supply. If you're system is'nt getting enough power one of the signs is that the system will often reboot itself. Hope this helps.

"the reason why is you have a intel product..You need to buy a AMD/VIA combo to solve your problem. "

Stop trolling (you know dumb comments like that are just asking to start a war) and get real, everyone knows that Intel still has superior stability over AMD (amd with any chipset).

Are you using a UPS or surge protector?

Make sure your power supply is OK. Is your CPU overclocked? If so, take the voltage up a notch or drop the CPU down some.

My computer kept on rebooting and I found out that I had a bad power supply.

There could be a few reasons for sudden reboots:
Overheating
MB touching the case
Memory (too much, too poor, too rich)
Poor PS............

hmmm...ok...great suggestions!!

the voltages on the power supply seem to be running steady via the mother board monitoring software...i haven't metered it yet to be sure. (it's an antec case with an amd approved 300 watt ps).

i should have mentioned that this was a straight reload. so i doubt if any viruses could be at play...although, i've seen stranger things.

i'm not sure about temp being the culprit, as it occurs sometimes just after turning it on. but then can run for days at a time without doing it. it almost seems like it has something to do with the particular apps that are running (agent, media player, winamp..).

bangsailio..i'll check that when i get home.

thanks!

It could DEFINATELY be a software issue. I was having the same problem just a few days ago and it turned out to be some cdwriter software by Roxio that was causing it... something to look into anyway.

What a stupid thing to say. Like VIA/AMD systems can`t have problems? I suppose all the problems people had with the VIA/Soundblaster combination were just made up.

thanks for all the suggestions.

i did uncheck autoreboot and did not have any problems last night.

now...just gotta figure out what the problem is that was causing it to reboot...
