Why i'm going to stop using Firefox

i've been using firefox since it was firebird, but recently i have been irritated with the problems that i've been experiencing, and was hoping they would have been fixed by now

-The browser will slow it's speed when it comes to loading new pages until it finally stops loading any new pages until i kill the process and start it up
-Plugin support is weak, it won't display WMV files that are embedded :|
-Memory cleanup is very weak, for some reason, even with one firefox window loaded with a text website, it still stays at the highest usage it peaked at. for some reason i'm at 300 MB and i only have a simple class website that's in plain text displayed
-when clicking on a link, or opening a new tab, there is almost a 1 second period where the browser will not respond

i'm probably going to give MyIE a try again

Use Opera instead. Even with the MyIE wrapper, IE still isn't standards complient or secure. Feature bullet points aren't the only reason to use or not use a peice of software

I have none of those issues on a slower machine with less RAM. Completely remove the program and re-install.

You machine needs some troubleshooting.

Agreed!

What version are you using?

Uninstall & reinstall . . . . try, try again

(you might ALSO run IE or Opera or Netscape to see if there are OTHER 'issues') ;)

i think that firefox really doesn't like opera because when i was trying to download it, it locked up on me

is there a way to re-install firefox cleanly without losing my XPI's?

ya, there is definately something weird going on here.

There was only one time I ever had firefox act so strangely on me and that was on a WinXP system I was troubleshooting that ended up having bad ram.

I had installed a gig of corsair value in a AMD64 machine and a couple bits went wrong high up in the addressing range. the problem would happen around 900megs or so. During normal use there simply wasn't enough going on to fill up the ram to that point even with the normal caching that modern Virtual memory systems do. (instead of erasing data out of RAM (or letting it erase.) it simply moves to a new section of RAM until it needs the space back) You'd play Doom3 it would crash after about 15 minutes and thats when the system started acting strangely, especially if you open up a browser.

I(we) am(are) not saying that firefox is all-perfect, but check out some other stuff.

check out memtest for instance. Download the ISO image, unzip it, then burn it to a cdrom as a ISO image (as opposed to just copying it to a cdrom) and boot up with it. Let it run for a couple hours. If you get any errors then that's probably your problem. Read the Usage guide online there, especially about troubleshooting ram errors, if you get any.

What extensions do you have installed? It might be that some slow downs could be caused by poor coding on the extension author's part.

interesting. I had firefox showing as using 24 megs of memory. I opened up 10 tabs twice, and went to a different website on each. memory usage after closing the tabs out is at 39 megs now. Possibly memory leak?

Right, and the fact that there's so many other people using it without your problems means nothing?

Even though Opera has the longer list?

Because of the longer list, who wants a browser full of crap that you can't remove?

Actually I just stopped using Firefox for very similar reasons. Mostly the memory management. The time it takes to restore the browser from a minimized state after heavy use of other apps is completely unacceptable (30 sec+). There is a big long bug report on this and there are LOTS of people seeing these memory problems but it hasn't been fixed yet. And yes I have tried most of the cache and memory tweaks and I am running 1.0 and deleted my profile and all that. This has been going on since the .6 versions and I finally got so fed up with it I switched. I tried Avant, and Maxthon and finally settled on Slimbrowser. It has all the features I need and is much more responsive. I really want to use Firefox but at this stage in the game, I can't. It just doesn't work as well as the IE based browsers.
