Uh huh... and you think wearing religion on his sleeve isn't the referendum? The man apparently lives for the purpose of pissing off a great deal of the population.

Which has nothing to do with small government principles, the sort that he has betrayed in the past.

You can't just redefine conservatism now that being libertarian is fashionable... Like it or not, social conservatism is half of the Republican formula. The other half is fiscal conservatism but only when it harms the poor and middle class, combined with fiscal liberalism when it benefits the wealthy and corporations.

A referendum on conservatism.

I've listened to all the conservative blowhards who claim Obama is a liberal if you pit conservatism up against liberalism, conservatism wins every time.

Rick Santorum is clearly the most conservative candidate of all the Republicans so we would finally have the answer to this theory. Since Santorum and Obama are the most polar opposite of all the candidates it would also answer where on the political spectrum the country lies.

No Rick Santorum is NOT the most conservative candidate of all the Republicans. You fucking tool. You don't even know what "conservative" is. Like morons throwing around liberal, lols.

The most conservative is RP, who has zero chance of winning, therefore the most conservative with a chance of winning is Santorum.

The most conservative is RP

But he's not. His policies sound old-timey so your typical brain dead conservatard is fooled into thinking they're conservative, but they're really not. The thing is, a conservative world actually works. It's not good, with all the slavery and religious persecution and oppression of women, but it gets the job done. Ron Paul, on the other hand, is batshit insane and his ideas are just fundamentally flawed. I don't care how big a police state you have, they just won't work.

Anyone else notice that the Republicans are "small government", "fiscal", and "social" conservatives only when they are out of power?

Rick Santorum is the most socially conservative, and unfortunately a fanatical devotion to fundamentalist Christianity has become a cornerstone of modern American conservatism.

Ron Paul really is the most conservative if one follows the traditional Republican small-government objective to its logical extreme. Modernly, however, "conservatism" has come to mean a more restrictive set of social policies and a more aggressive military approach. Neither of these is, obviously, a Ron Paul objective. For my money his emphasis on small government is too extreme to be practical, but I certainly do consider him a conservative.

Santorum is more culturally conservative (the only bad kind of conservative), but not more fiscally conservative.

This.

He's conservative in all the wrong ways.

Just because he and nightly news call him conservative does not make it so, at least not in a way that embodies the whole meaning of the word.

The social aspects always get so much attention in politics but so often have no real impact in how someone does the job they get elected for.
