The lyrics make sense. You can listen to the damn song and know what they mean. You ever try to understand what Bush or the Smashing Pumpkins are actually talking about? Also, 90%+ of punk rock isn't about love/women/relationships/etc....

straightforward and to the point:

I don't give a fvck about nicaragua
I don't give a sh!t about the President
I don't care about suburban white kids
Trying to show they've got compassion
Politics are boring
Politics are fvcking boring
Philosophizing propoganda spewing
Teenage armchair revolutionaries
What's the problem? What's the matter?
You're sitting there getting fatter
You say that you hate capitalism
And won't you compromise
But when you're out of cigarettes
THE FUNNY THING IS YOUR BUTT'S FULL OF JIZZ
You pompous ass your moral outrage
Gives me a fvcking headache
Closed your mind got all the answers
Don't even realize you're an asshole
If you had any brains I guess you'd see
You're a narrow minded judgemental left wing nazi
I don't give a fvck about Nicarauga (x4)
*That's why I spelled it wrong

Here's some lyrics from a more popular band/song:

I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering. Fundamental differing.
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication.

I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame it doesn't mean I don't desire to
Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over.
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it.
Finding beauty in the dissonance.

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication.

Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed lovers/brothers

Dont get me wrong, it's a good song, but I don't want to spend 45 minutes trying to figure out what he's saying. I like the "get to the point" approach.

Punk Rock Girl - The Dead Milkmen
Punk Rock Girl

One Saturday I took a walk to Zipperhead
I met a girl there and she almost knocked me dead

Punk rock girl
Please look at me
Punk rock girl
What do you see?
Let's travel round the world
Just you and me punk rock girl

I tapped her on the shoulder
And said do you have a bell?
She looked at me and smiled and said she did not know

Punk rock girl
Give me a chance
Punk rock girl
Let's go slam dance
We'll dress like Minnie Pearl
Just you and me punk rock girl

We went to the Philly Pizza Company
And ordered some hot tea
The waitress said well no, we only have it iced
So we jumped up on the table and shouted anarchy
And someone played a Beach Boys song on the jukebox
It it was "California Dreamin"
So we started screamin
On such a winter's day

She took me to her parents for a Sunday meal
Her father took one look at me and he began to squeal

Punk rock girl
It makes no sense
Punk rock girl
Your dad is vice president
Just like the Duke of Earl
Yeah you're for me punk rock girl

We went to a shopping mall
And laughed at all the shoppers
And security guards trailed us to a record shop
We asked for Mojo Nixon
They said he don't work here
We said if you don't got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin

We got into her car away we started rollin
I said how much you pay for this
Said nothin man it's stolen

Punk rock girl
You look so wild
Punk rock girl
Let's have a child
We'll name her Minnie Pearl
Just you and me
Eat fudge banana swirl
Just you and me
We'll travel round the world
Just you and me
Punk rock girl

punk music is the only genre I can't stand. The same generic chords, lyrics are easy to understand because they are bland and stupid(they almost make pop music sound intelligent). And did you ever notice that the lead singer almost ALWAYS sings with the SAME stupid accent? Is that like a rule, you have to sing with that stupid accent to be punk?

I can see you complaining about the same chords, but what do you mean the lyrics are stupid? You been listening to blink 182 or something?

And what accent are you talking about?

my sister listens to a lot of punk bands. I don't know who all of them are, ones I recall at the moment: mest, vandals, umm I forget, good charlotte(she likes to think they are punk...even I know they are pop).

The lyrics just seem really thoughtless in much of it. Granted there are exceptions, but much it is REALLY similar to pop lyrics(different subjects though, pop whines about love, punk whines about life in general). And its hard to describe the accent...but they all have it. Green Day is in a different class than the crap she listens to, but they have one of the strongest examples of the 'punk accent'.

All the bands you listed are pop bands. I'll be glad to send you a couple songs if you like.

she listens to alot of other, smaller bands. I couldn't tell you their names, I remember the more popular ones. But the same theory applies to all of them. Accent included.

me loves punk rock. Granted, my appreciation of music spans most genres, but punk was there from the start. And the concerts be cheap, don't have to pay any record label bigwigs.. :)

listening to stuff: the Vandals, Sublime, NOFX, H2O, Rancid, Pennywise, Antiflag, Sugarcult, Misfitsand so much more....

^pulled that from her AOL profile, a few more bands for the list.

Deeko, what is it that make lyrics good, or at least not bland and stupid?
I dunno, alot of punk music just sounds like stuff disgruntled teenagers wrote in their garages at the age of 13 and then when they got older and hit it big kept the same ones. I mean, music doesn't HAVE to be a lyrical masterpiece or anything, I primarily listen to house music, lyrics aren't exactly the focus there.

Yep. As long as a song sounds good to me, I don't care if it's rap, punk rock, classical, or country. I lean more towards classic rock, but I like something from most genres of music, except maybe that crazy acid-rock screaming type stuff.

I don't know what you think of this, but it doesn't sound like a 13 year old wrote it to me:

Gigin alone at the bottom of the hill
Our protagonist named Bill
Sets his sghts on an anchor steam pint
All he needs is thirteen quarters
Congregated in his hat
A crow, a scavenger type
California redemption provides him with his rent
Room and board inside a fifth of comfort
As the wind penetrates his bones
His mind keep focused
Tidal waves of sound catapulted
From his horn wail like lovers
The coins don't drop consistent as does the mercury
His meter slows realizing a zenith
He's reached perfection
No one did see him die

i agree. tool's lyrics aren't particularly hard to follow if you have even a rudimentary knowledge of psychology or psychedelics. the smashing pumpkins aren't exactly rocket science either. as for bush, i don't think they have anything to say, they just want you to think they have something to say. ;)

Sigh. I think lyrics are one of the worst things that ever happened to music. I'm no music scholar, but I do enjoy listening to ***music***. Don't get me wrong, done correctly and with good taste lyrics can really add depth to the song. Hell, just the voice, without even really saying anything, can be a very powerful instrument. It's just gotten to the point that whenever I play a piece of instumental music they get irritated and say, "Are there any words to this?" like being instumental is a bad thing.

while the song was written produced before hand, that Tool song will forever remind me of and enter my head at the thought of 9/11.
