ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THE IGNORANCE OF SOME PEOPLE IS STAGGERING!

I have an Asian friend who bought a CDRW and wanted me to install it in her Compaq. As to why you would spend $250 on a burner for a 233 MHz computer, I will never know, but she asked me to come install it for her. I've done DOZENS of installations, this should have been no problem. First, the BASTARDS at Compaq gave her one IDE connection for her secondary connector, WTF!??!!!??! WHY THE FVCK WOULD YOU DO THAT?!?! Anyways I spend two hours on it and the hard drive willl no longer be detected if it is on the same chain as the CDRW for some reason although I am sure the jumpers are correct. It's too damn easy to mess up. But I fail to get it working. I leave, the CDRW is in the bay but it is not connected - no power, no IDE, nothing.

Last night she calls me - "Umm I put my computer to sleep, and now it won't come back out. What did you do?" Why would you think I did anything? Your system is in no way changed from before I touched it because nothing is connected. I then asked her, "When did you last use the sleep button?"

"I would say some time in November."

Great! AJLKDKJALSHDKJSAHDKJSAHDLKJSAHDLKJSAHDKJSAHDKLJHASDLKJHSADLJAHSLKJDAH WHY ARE YOU BLAMING ME! Get a real computer if you want me to work on it anymore. God damn how can otherwise intelligent people be so ignorant?

you understand the relationship of master and slave and cable select?

Consider this a lesson learned... I try to stay as far away from other people computers as much as possible... FAAAAR too many things can go wrong that i dont want to be responsible for... as far as not getting the computer to detect the burner seems like a jumper problem if ive ever heard one, but, oh well...

have fun :)

Yes, I understand the relationship. I've been doing hard drive installations for four years now and never once had a problem getting master/slave combinations to work. I've built three of my own PCs and I've supported dozens more. This is the first time I have had any problems.

Hey man, I spent $1000 on a burner for a 166 MHz computer. And the blanks were $10 each.

I worked on an HP that is a Pentium 233 and the person installed a new hard drive and chose the jumper as a slave.

Now there is the original hard drive and that is a quantum bigfoot and it appears to be on cable select. There is two connectors on the ribbon with a master and slave option.

And the internet for him did not work for a few days after he installed the new drive.

It took me awhile but I set it to cable select on the newer drive because I do not know what the heck the old one does.

So... Have some patience. Do it right in the beginning and they will not come crawling back. Unless they install BS software.

i did my brother a favor and set him up with a hotmail account, since his company doenst allow personal email in their system. Now, everyday, he comes over and has to check his email. He has yet to get ANYTHING, nothing, not a thing. Its been 2 weeks and he still comes over to check.

On top of it all, twice he interrupted my girlfriend and i "bonding." Talk about a bummer... =].

Why does her ethnicity have anything to do with this?

It doesn't. Where did you get that it did?

It has nothing more to do with it than her sex. Are you going to jump on me now for saying 'her' instead of 'him/her'?

My Brother (Male, Not Asian :) ) , said his computer was running slow, and wanted me to come over and help.

I found that he downloads every piece o crap, that can be found on the net. He opens, and even helps to spread, Email chain letters. Found so much crap running, sitting on the task bar. I asked him what all this crap was?? He had no clue, Took a few hours to delete the crap and clean up his system. He is on DSL, so I uninstalled the Access Manager Bloatware, and put on PPPOE.. Well, now he is happy, the system is smoking, compared to what it was.. Few days later he calls me, to come install the PPPOE driver again.. For some reason he called Bell DSL Support, and they helped him to put Access Manager back on. ARRRGHHHHH

Well said!

I'll bet nobody would've said a thing, had you said "My friend who is 5'6" tall...", or "My blue-eyed friend..." One's race is a characteristic, just like hair color. Just because someones race is mentioned does not make it derogatory. People are much too sensitive these days.

I added a stick of ram to a (comp illiterate) friend's computer. A week later he was installing some program and it locked up. He called me and said it was my fault because he had installed programs with no difficulty in the past. LoL, somehow the extra ram must be causing this poorly-made freeware program to stop his PC.

Thats the problem with having friends! ACtually, if you consider people who bug you for free help and then curse you later as 'friends' then maybe you don't have as many friends as you think. Furthermore, if you were a friend back to this person, you wouldn't be cursing them for not being like you.

It wouldn't have anything to do with BIOS settings would it? Compaq is notorious for hiding BIOS config. If you can't get to it from boot, load up the Compaq utilities from their webpage. From there make sure the drives are set as auto detect. Me thinks that's the prob. Jumpers do no good if the BIOS doesn't allow the comp to auto detect the drives.

I've had pretty good luck de-bastardising my sister's compaq. Deltree'd c:\windows\ and then installed millenium, found drivers for everything, I even switched hard drives and everything worked. I was impressed, but anything proprietary is suck. Kind of ironic how compaq was the first to "open" ibm architecture.

yes, i was also wondering why you stuck in "Asian friend".
does it make a difference what race your friend was?
are you trying to imply something about Asians?
Why not just say "I have a friend..."

in this context, it just seems like you are trying to stereo-type asians as being ignorant and irresponsible. choose words carefully. luckily we can edit posts here =)

Not trying to start any beef here... just wondering...

and actually, if you did state blue eyed, or 5'6", I would also be wondering why you would choose to include such irrelevant information. :D

What does that have to do with anything? I don't say my black friend or my nazi friend or my dumb white friend in my posts do I?

Don't you love friends. I try to do as little as possible for them unless they aren't complete wankers. One, after I helped him to install Win2K dual boot panicked because he couldn't find drivers for his old POS agfa scanner and was wondering if he should go back to straight 98. Damn right he should, 2K is much too good for him. On top of that he decided he'd become security concious and decided to lock down access to his printer. (1 pc at home mind you) He then deleted everyone from permissions, including the Administrators Group. Then he wondered why it didn't work anymore. WHACK!

He was telling a story. Most good storytellers include details, so others can follow along.
