It all sounds the same
It's trendy
They sing about the same old irrelevant crap
They just yell, trying to fit their lyrics to their music,, "You're not the boss of me now and you're so big" etc etc.
I'm tired of seeing "punk rawk" on hotornot keyword lists.
There is little actual music involved.
There is no soul.
Almost all the shows in Austin are punk shows.

Punk has evolved from that anarchist nonsense that actually had some character to the Britney Spears of the new millennium.

agreed

but some of the underground punk is quite good, but the pop punk boom with all these 13 year old kids going out and buying a guitare trying to play like blink 182 has ruined it.

your trendy music probably consists of

1. avril lavine
2. blink 182
3. good charolette (sp)
4. A New Found Glory
5. Sum 41
6. SR 71

BUT thoes people are outcasted from the punk community. because they SOLD OUT. yes. sell out music is trendy, becasue its what teeny bopper kids like to hear. a clean cut sound.

TRUE punk music, the stuff from the heart, and truely defines punk.
1. The Vandals
2. NOFX
3. AFI
4. Digger
5. NIRVANA

they are the heart of punk music. and i DARE you to listen to the songs, and tell me that they are the same.

and you statement that punk
Punk has evolved from that anarchist nonsense that actually had some character to the Britney Spears of the new millennium.

punk was around long before. Remember the Sex Pistols? 1980's anyone?
punk has evolved from many things, but one thing is certain. NOT britney spears.

No soul?
this is real life stuff they are talking aboul

Little Music?
i have friends in bands, that can play anything you want them to. but they choose punk becasue it is what they believe in. you try playing guitar or drums that fast.

Same irrelevant crap?
i hope you dont listen to country music. becasue that is all "my dog died, my wife left me, and i have this bottle of jack to take me away"

you really need to open your eyes

Sorry.. my friends listen to generic punk like those Irish guys from California. Are you sure Nirvana is punk? I thought they were grunge. I'll "obtain" some Digger and NOFX and get back to you.

I was gonna say to go listen to the Sex Pistols, and tell me it's not different, but hey.

Kurt Cobain described Nirvana as "heavy rock with punk overtones." So while not entirely punk, there is definitely an element of punk in their music.

I would have to generally agree.
but I also agree with the solution, Don't listen to it :D

I do the same, works good!

I do like bands like 311 though (might be considered punk to some)

it sounds like your complaint lies more with the commercialized "punk rock" that is mass produced by records labels today. The true punk rock, at it's inception was a cultural movement and rebellion against many things not least of which is the very pop music that you're ranting about.

so real punk is cool until a widespread audience begins to listen to it, where it becomes "pop" and then uncool?
rolleye.gif
the whole notion of selling out is stupid - say you're in it for the music all you want, but EVERY person who starts a rock band has dreams of hitting it big, making big money, and getting laid by tons of chicks. they shouldn't be shunned because of success

Like any other music, punk contains many sub genres that differ stylistically. Here are some bands that I enjoy:

NOFX
The Ramones
Craig's Brother
The Living End
Thrice
Alkaline Trio
Hot Water Music
Bad Religion
Instant Winner (local)
Social Distortion
Coheed and Cambria (more rock if you ask me, but a lot of people consider it punk)
No Use for a Name
Millencollin
Rufio (I went to school with the guitarist)

There are a lot more that I like too. I used to be really into punk like AFI and Rancid when I was in high school, but now I look for the stuff with slightly better guitar work and more varied vocal keys.

Hold up a sec, you just said NOFX and The Vandals are drastically different from NFG and the like? Sorry, you are mistaken. I've heard all of them, and your second list is just as bad as the first. Except Nirvana...what the hell are they doing on there

Remember boys and girls, if more than you and your right hand know about a band, they're not cool anymore and you're a Social Outcast who is Selling Out To The Man. Time to go find another crappy starting band and plaster their logo-feces all over your backpack, car, locker, or whatever else you own in your piddling little high-school life!

no one every said that it wasn't paradoxal in some ways. a better way to think out it would be to move behind the confines of music and think of it a type of ideology or identity.

Selling out isn't just becoming popular. In order to become popular, you have to change your values significantly. There is a difference between punk that appeals to anarchists and punk that appeals to Republicans, and apparently the latter is taking over, but it's not on major record labels but local shows.

exactly, its stupid. Your album WAS cool and punk, people buy it, it is still the same album, but suddenly you are a sellout and your music is pop. I love these people. I don't think 99.9% of people have heard of Lasgo, when I find someone that has, I'm glad, I don't suddenly hate it.

It was also trendy 10 years ago.. and it will be trendy again in 10 more years. What about me? I got into punk 14 years ago. Am I trendy?
So what music isn't about the "same old irrelevant crap". What punk rock have you listened to?
If you think all punk rock is yelling, that proves you don't listen to it. Maybe, instead of judging, you go out and find some GOOD music instead of that crap the radio and MTV feeds you.
I agree that "punk rawk" is a bit played
There is a LOT of music involved. What insturments do you play? What songs have you written? What melodies do you sing?
If you think there is no soul in punk rock, you're fvcked in the head. Punk rock is all about emotion.
I don't know sh|t about Austin.

<angry high school punk voice> Dude, Lasgo? Man, they're SO sellouts! I mean, they've got money and they're still good and they haven't changed their music, but DUDE! People LISTEN to them! We gotta HATE them now! Anarchy! F*ck the system!

/flailing arms

Aw crap man, I'm tangled in my 78 dog-chains and piercings. WEAK, DUDE!

yea but if you found that their new album was drastically different because they're on a major record label, and you can't go to one of their concerts without being trampled by screaming teenybopper high school chicks with their testosterone infested high school boys, you just might.

The same sh|t happened ten years ago.

Personally, I am always glad to see the bands that I have supported for a long time finally hit it big. People who are "true punks" and get pissed when the bands that they like go to a major label (or whatever your definition of selling out is) are idiots.

This is the biggest problem with the "punk community". You have to try and maintain your integrity, but you sure as hell can't do it for free.
