I've done it pretty effortlessly

You must have had about 75 tabs open to get that much ram usage.

Okay, I went there and now it's at 69 Megs. Was I suppose to do something at that site to make it eat my RAM?

Oh, what version do you have? Maybe the problem was on my end, but one of my friend's had the same issue.

Maybe it was a memory hog in the past, but its not really one now. Ram Usage

Thats 100 tabs open, plus my extentsions running, and only 195 MB of ram usage. To get to 300 MB of ram usage, you'd need something like 200 tabs open. Anyone with an ounce of sanity would not try to open 200 tabs.

Lets have a little fun here, shall we? We have the following two pictures from you: Pic 1 Pic 2

Now, I'm assuming you didn't open any new apps in the background between those two pics, since you still have 43 processes going, and everything looks the same. Now, look at the bottom of task manager, where it says commit charge. In pic 2, commit charge is 524MB, in pic 1, it is only 375MB. Now, how did 149 MB of ram get used in those 3 minutes between pictures? I think Maxthon isn't being truthful with its memory usage.

Yeah, the memory problems which have dogged FireFox are really one hell of an achilles heel. Thankfully most of our (AnandTecher's) PCs are equipped with at least a GB of ram, which goes a long way toward negating it. Other than that though, it's really an amazing browser. I (and most here) feel its benefits far outweigh the memory usage problems.

I haven't tried Opera, mostly due to it having been shareware until just recently. What is its skinning / addon community like? This is one of my favorite things about FF.

Yuo were having problems with virtual memory caching?

I don't think so, I took the screenshot, opened paint instantly, went to imageshack instantly, browsed to find the Jpeg to host instantly, etc. All of this on a 3200+ winchester. nothing special

Unfortunately I'm not willing to use IE any more than I have to (eg. occasional windows updates and virus scans at trendmicro.com). I'd be willing to give Opera a shot though.

Why does it really matter? unless you have a dual core cpu so that you can browse when playing games or if your memory limited, but other than that who cares how much mem usage a browser uses?

I have a p4b 2.6 and keep a window open while in games  Anyway, it's still got that ram allocated when you're in games. If you close it, obviously, you lose your specific spot in each tab. The most common example for me is looking something WoW-related up on the web while playing, or surfing AT during long flights (Hi, my name is RBachman and I'm a WoW-o-holic :(), but when I tear myself away from MMORPGs long enough to play other games, I still like to have a browser window open. PS, if my previous replies haven't made it clear enough, I do use and very much like FireFox - just being honest here.

Addons? Opera doesn't need addons, that's the difference between it and other browsers. It's already the most functional, most secure browser on the internet. Many FF plugins are simply designs based on features already found in opera(and admitted to by the authors).
