Why I don't like Windows 10

With all the options and alternatives, I'm inclined to think anyone seriously complaining about the UI in 10 regarding the start menu just wants to complain about something. You truly can have it any way you want it for minimal cost/effort right now in 2015.
If you can't, then tuff. I can.

Well it makes sense to have a default programmes link to start off with. You click it, set your default programmes then get rid of it.
Its not really the same as changing the start menu entirely. More like getting rid of an unwanted icon on the desktop.

There is some merit because they've somehow managed to make a start menu more laggy than a full-screen menu.

Win10 Start Menu is instantaneous, no lag when I click on it.


I still like Win+X menu(right click in left corner ie on Start button) one of my favourites from 8 which is also on 10.
 
My biggest concern is the forced update, you either never get any update, which include security one or you have to get all of them. The second thing is the data collection, even after disabling all of them and editing the host file there is still some data collection and it piss me off. I should move to linux...
 
Win 10 menu is instant pop for me. I am running it on a couple quick machines (in bio) so that I'm sure helps. We've run a few tests on some first gen core 2 duo machines (7400 I think) with 2gb of ram and a 7200rpm spindle drive and it was responsive and quick. Ran nicer than windows 7 on the same machine.

I like that they left the right-click option on the start menu. Very useful for getting to setting menus like control panel and system info.

The edge browser does have some glitches. I used it exclusively the first couple days but now I just test it out a couple times a week to see if they've improved it with updates. I generally use chrome for most of my browsing. Edge I've found to sometimes be laggy and have slow ui elements. I'm sure it'll improve but not ready for prime time for me personally.
 
Edge seems experimental to me and I still prefer the traditional browsers to it so it goes unused. As for the 10 menu it responds instantly on all 3 of my pc's so if you're seeing issues you've got corruption somewhere in your registry or dll files.

I've been testing different websites with Edge, it doesn't even display my webmail properly and there's several sites where it neglects to display everything on the page. lol

you mean like removing a Live Tile you don't want...

As I said, default 7 menu sucks. It doesn't make sense to me to have all these links that I never use. I think the default 10 menu is great. Others disagree, but in the end it is just spending the time to customize it how you want.

This is key.

The start screen initially bothered me some in 8, and less in 8.1 because I took the 10 minutes to get things set up for my use.

In 8/8.1, it was still never perfect, but it was far more tolerable.

<shrug>

When XP introduced the double wide menu I really liked having the extra links there to things I use (and I removed the ones I don't use in the settings). Vista and 7 improved on it, IMO.

8/8.1 annoyed me until I got smart and just pinned things I used frequently, like it was designed for. I still prefer a menu though over a full screen.

Still have not tried 10 yet so I have no opinion there yet.

I don't like the live tiles at all, even for things I use. Too big to be neat, too small to show any meaningful information.

You can change those links to shortcuts or flyout menus or get rid of them entirely.

It's better than the one in 8/8.1 that's for sure. And no matter how much I customise it it's not going to work like the one in 7 does for me.

No lag on mine, I don't like lag, so I buy fast computers. 🙂
Start10 or whatever there is shouldn't be laggy.

Heck I haven't seen a start menu lag since a hard drive was thrashing
on a PC out of ram.

That's the problem there for some users, Win10 is a Win10 OS not Win7, they expect it to look and work exactly like Win7 which is a little naive, sure Win10 has changes but nothing major in regards to learning curve etc...


Microsoft have a habbit or moving /changing things, but nothing an average user can't adjust to.

I think some users are too hang up on Win7, they either move forward or stay on their old Win7 forever, choice is theirs.

As you know plenty of third party alternatives for Start Menu if they must have it like Win7.

As do I, but I don't think 10 was meant for anything but a SSD. I had the displeasure of upgrading two laptops circa 2010-2011, one a clean install Turion X2 and one an upgrade on an AMD APU. Both take noticeably longer to bring up the menu than does 8 or even 7. This isn't going to hurt me and my experience, but I am unimpressed with it on older machines.

In classic shell under settings - general behavior uncheck highlight newly installed programs and the highlight will go away. PliotronX I just noticed your avatar of the obese spiderman that has broken his web which made me ROFL.
 
I've never understood any need for "highlight newly installed programs" . Hopefully, you installed it so you should already know it's there. 🙂
 
The Win10 start menu in my opinion is a regression from both Win7 and 8.1. On a touch device the start screen in 8.1 was much better and easier to customise. Yes you can go full screen in 10 but you can no longer swipe to get into All Apps. You no longer can select multiple live tiles at once to rearrange a whole group. Also the default width for groups is set at three medium tiles and they don't dynamically change like in 8.1. The last problem is more noticeable when you don't run full screen menu as there is no way to resize the menu on a touch device so you are left with huge wasteful blank spaces. As it is the start menu is so unpolished that I've decided to install Classic Shell, something I never felt necessary on Win8.1. Classic shell is OK but its not perfect for touch. What I'd really like is the start screen from Win8.1 (or at least the same functionality in Win10) but that doesn't exist.
 
I will whine a little:

1. Edge doesn't work correctly. MS should have saved it for the next software update, vs. making people hate it right off the bat due to many things it doesn't do correctly. I have only used it enough to not like it, and am back to FF.

2. The new Photo viewer doesn't work correctly. Did a little registry work to bring back the old Photo Viewer and make it default, as it is still there, but hidden.

3. Tiles for the apps that I want on the start menu are ugly. Fortunately you can remove them all and have a decent and small start menu.

4. Also related to the start menu, I can't change the number of icons on the LH side of the start menu. Most Used stays at six. If I open different apps, and drag it up, I still only see 6, and I don't see an option to change that.

5. You can't change default app settings from opening the app. And this doesn't apply to everything. For some apps, it asks you if you want to change it, but answering will not change it. You have to go to Settings/System/Default apps to actually make the change. I have no idea why they did this, especially since it doesn't apply to everything anyway (Photos you can still change from a right-click).

Might well be, I did an old tk-57 amd acer and it's faster than 7 was, but it has a cheap SSD.
