I'm chinese in indonesia and i don't use chinese name too . all chinese here use english / indonesian name i think and it just like that i think since i was born LOL

Heh, I supposed you are too young to remember when the Indonesian government would discriminate you if you only use Chinese name in you Birth Certificate/important document. It was pretty "cool" too that as Chinese Indonesian that you must put that info in your Indentity Card (KTP) lol.

Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination_against_Chinese_Indonesians

Quote from the article: "Chinese Indonesians were forced to choose Indonesian-sounding names,[c][9] forbidden to practice their traditions,[d][10] and required to obtain extra proof of citizenship"

On the other hand, I think there is less discriminatory policy towards them now, which is good since I still have family there.

PS: I think you're a cutie pie <3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hong_Kong

A heroic but futile battle was fought by the British to defend Hong Kong from Japan in WW2.

wow i always thought american gave hk back in 1997. internet is a great asset for human use! never knew it was the british that gave hk back. i was pretty a nuisance and dont know about geography and even now. never into politic. space stuff more exciting like curious whats up there and if theres any other being like us that lives in other planet.

anyway good to finally know about the hong kong history. if the curiosity of the name thing dont come up i would still thought american gave hong kong back.

why do americans have english names....why do english people use names that originate from the middle east...

anyways op is confused, chinese have full chinese names as well as english names. just because you have an english form of a name doesn't mean you don't also have a full chinese name as well.

just look at jackie chan.

陳港生
his name is not jackie in chinese, in hk the english name is almost a nickname.

the first two characters in a chinese name are the "first name", the last character is the surname. the english version is thus a hybrid.

no one is confused about it.

anyways you might as well wonder why china is named china vs 中华人民共和国

Err, his family name is Chen, which is the first word in his name. There are compound family names, but his is not one of them. Literal translation of his name is "born in HK to the family Chen" Very common name.

His stage name is a whole different story... He takes a word that sounds the same as his last name and used dragon as his name. Loosely translated is "become dragon".

For Indonesian Chinese, if you look closely at the last name, you can usually find the Chinese last name "hidden" in the longer Indonesian name.

I am not sure how serious the OP is, but in China (where I live) English names are usually picked in English class. The teacher helps and often names 1/2 their class. Singapore is all over the map. English names, just initials or keeps the Chinese name. Same for Malaysia. Koreans tend to use their initials rather than taking on an English name (JK Park, for example).

For the most part, it is for ease of doing business as English is the international language of business. I also have been finding that Chinese with easy to pronounce names are tending more and more to stick with their original Chinese names.

When Chinese families moved to places like the USA, their names often got changed to fit local spelling. Zhang (sort of pronounced jong) became Wang, for example.

I have slowly been learning Mandarin. I am pretty tone deaf in English, so it is a real struggle.

i had to contact this Asian woman at work the other night. Our directory listed her name as Asian first name, Asian last name. I asked her how to pronounce her name and she said to call her Susan...

That's fucking funny because whities like to hook up with asian females 'cause they have a pedophile complex, but have no idea how to say their fucking name when they're jack hammering the tiny things, so the asian females come up with names the whities can say when they're getting boned.

That took some serious imagination to come up with that reason. The other reason is just because its easier to have an American nickname than dealing with people mangling their Chinese name all day. It's an attempt to socially integrate better.

Wasn't it only, like 1998, that Hong Kong returned to China? This is VERY recent history. I'm ashamed that I don't remember the exact year, but not even knowing that it was an English colony? Shame.

Anyway, it wasn't just Hong Kong either. Shanghai- Hell: The entire country of India.
