It is an excellent crop, it's fibers are stronger and longer than wood fibers, and it is renewable. We would not need to cut down all of our remaining old growth forests, though we have already cleared 99 percent of old growth forest in America
Unfortunately the lobbying by the industries who manufacture products that are inferior to hemp keep it from happening. Also the taboo surrounding it keeps politicians from even considering it. Something that could do great good for America cannot happen due to the harm it may do to a politicians career. With all of the war on terror commercials blaming drug users for september 11, perhaps we should have on for politicians who continue to support our dependence on foreign oil when we could grow fuel from hemp and corn.
August 13, 1941, Henry Ford first displayed his plastic car at Dearborn Days in Michigan. The car ran on fuels derived from hemp and other agricultural based sources, and the fenders were made of hemp, wheat, straw, and synthetic plastics. Ford said his vision was "to grow automobiles from the soil."
