After I replaced the intel retail HSF with a new FOP32 for my PIII-700, now my cpu temp reads 5C HIGHER!!!

It's 53C now while the MB temp remains the same at 27C.

is there any possible explaination for this???

EDIT: those temps were read from BIOS setup, my MB is CUSL2 with bios v1003.

You need enough to fill the microscopic gaps between the CPU and heatsink. As long as the layer fills the gaps, the thinner the better. As a safe recommendation, apply a dab to both the heatsink and core, rub it in with your finger in a clean plastic bag (Mikewarrior2's idea, why did I never think of this?!), and make it thin enough that it's about 50% transparent.

reinstalled.........now its even higher.....55C!!!!!!!!

did i do anything wrong??? or the thermal pad is no good???

Did you take off all the protective sheets on the thermal pad? Also, if you're using the pad, you shouldn't put grease on there. Rub the pad off the HSF and use some rubbing alcohol to clean both the heat sink and the cpu. Put a dab of thermal grease on the cpu and spread it evenly with a rubber glove or something. Smear what's left onto the heatsink.

thanks guys
all the stores are closed now, i'll get some grease tormorrow and try again.....

is there anything to be aware of when installing FOP32? since i might've done something stupid...

i have an FOP-32 and because of that stubborn clip it can get cocked on the CPU die , just make sure its square when you clip it down. also , about the pad , i scraped mine off with some scotchbrite , then lapped the sink with 600 grit paper to smoooth out the scrathes . when all goes well it will be well worth your effort , as that is a very nice HSF. EDIT- except that #@%*& clip!
