What are we talking about here? Are we talking about traffic control lights (red, yellow, green) or street lamps (white) to light up the streets/curbs? I've seen plenty of traffic control lights that have gone LED and they are much better than standard traffic lights because they don't wash out in direct sunlight.

In New York, the lights already ARE replaced with LEDs.

I HATE them because they are too damn bright. Seriously, when my sinuses start adding a bit of light sensitivity I need sunglasses at night because of how bright the green lights and walk signals are. (THe red/don't walk isn't nearly as bad). They remind me of the lights used in the dentists chair. The street lights are also insanely bright, but not nearly as bad as the traffic signals. There is an area on 59th st where they added a lot more and its actually worse than staring directly into the sun.

I can clearly see the streetlights & green traffic lights all the way to Grand Central Station from 96th street. In fact they are still damn bright from that distance, which is 3.4 MILES. Noone needs to see the fvcking traffic lights from literally MILES away. Less light pollution my ass.

That's a very stupid statement but still made me laugh :)

The op posted about street lights and everyone is responding about traffic signals and crosswalk signals.

The first rule of ATOT is that people don't read the threads and are idiots, so don't be supprised.

The reason they haven't replaced street lights is likely due to the amount of light necessary, a typical street light is around 1000watts. An LED bulb to generate the equivalent lumens would be huge.

Even using those Luxeon star LEDs, it would still be way too big. Plus, High-Pressure Sodium lighting is very efficient. Rather than changing to LED lamps, some major cities (at least here in Canada) are changing to lower-wattage lamps with better reflectors that lower light pollution. They're saving money that way.

LEDs are less efficient than incandescent bulbs for a given wattage. The reason they are used for traffic lights is that you can have an LED with each color, instead of having to waste energy by using filters.
