Why hate Dell?

I bought my Dell 4600 on April 7th it has a 3.4ghz p4, 1gb ddr 3200, 9800pro, 200gb hd, XP, 6 months of earthlink, etc... for right @ $850 I can't complain.

Another reason I can't stand them - their damn proprietary, poorly designed cases.
I've got a Dimension l700cxe here, and I can only get one panel off - the left side. However, I need to remove the hard drive. Problem - I can't see how it's mounted. I THINK it is mounted to the front of the case, which means I need to get the front panel off. To do that, I need to get the right-side panel off. And I don't see any way of doing that.
I think the PC has a virus on it (or else it's just that WinME seriously sucks) - or something that is preventing the AVG program setup from running. So I want to hook the hard drive to another computer. But the damn thing is trapped in this monstrosity from Hell, or rather, Dell, sorry.
And yes, the power supply's wiring is completely different than a standard ATX plug, as is the auxilary power connector that it uses.

Ah yes, the preloaded stuff - everyone knows you can pile on the extra apps too on a Celeron 700 with 64MB of RAM.

I hate dell because I bought a laptop for my brother, an 8600. It lasted exactly a month before it refused to turn on. apparently the video card went, then the whole motherboard.

However, they gave me 200 dollars back when I threatened them if they didn't give me a new system since it hadn't lasted longer than a month.

For people who don't know how to build PC's, ignorance is bliss when they buy Dells. They get a "Pentium 4" system for around $500-600 and it HAS to be a good deal, but all their other hardware components suck for the price..

My friend got a Dimension 4600 about a year ago and the PSU died recently and before that, the system would always crash during games.. Tech support is always crap since you sit on the phone for over an hour and you keep getting transferred since they cannot understand you or don't know how to solve your problem..

Another friend got a Dimension 3000 - P4 2.66 with 512mb of RAM.. should be a pretty fast system, but naw, the way Dell configures it and loads up a bunch of BS at windows startup causes the computer to take FIVE MINUTES to startup! I cancelled about 10 startup programs in regedit, but it still takes about 3 min to start..

No one who is capable of building a system would buy a prebuilt system with proprietary parts, but I admit its not bad for the regular internet browser, email, chat user

OH I also hate how some of my friends rant and rave about their "FREE PRINTER" offer... They dont give you the parallel/usb cable to hook it up to your computer, and they want to charge you $20 for it (the value of the printer itself)!!! AND their printers eat up ink like an SUVs guzzle gas AND Dell ink cartridges cost at least $50!

Forgot one other point, I really look down on Dell for not offering their users a choice of the AMD 64 in their home systems and the Opteron in their servers as they are such a powerfull option to Intel for less $$$. Let the customer have a choice.

I don't hate Dell but I work in the tech department at a university library and we use almost all Dells now. My boss's fan in his Dell actually started smoking. My whole department thinks that the Dell customer service is really bad too so we never want to be the ones to RMA computers or parts.

the dell 400sc deals cannot be beat. the two that we have are great machines. got them barebones and put in our own scsi drives and extra ram.

Sure, they're fine - until something stops working. Then you have to deal with all the proprietary components and bizarre hardware mountings.

It stinks though - Dell does seem to have some good deals on PC's. I just wish they'd use more standard parts, as well as fewer extra useless programs that load at startup.

And I do have hobbies. Right now, I'm working on modifying my 2.4V Dustbuster to use 4 NiMH cells, for 4.8V, which is what the motor is rated at. Actually, "need...a hobby" might not be right. "Need help" might be more accurate.

The only real proprietary parts are the mb's and case's (what kind of geek doesn't have an extra case?)other than that your ok.

Dell does load a bunch of useless software but it only takes a minute to disable it.

I dont like dells because they are overpriced for what you get, and I like building comps myself. But, I tell all my friends who dont know anything about comps to get a Dell because I hate being the free tech support guy when their "router doesnt work" etc....
