there are NO otions in the bios. back when it was what everyone had, winbond ram WOULDNT WORK on a dell because they run their ram at cas3. not to mention all the other things like no amd, proprietary parts, etc.
 
Because they use misleading marketing. Stressing things like Celeron GHz, and Intel Extreme Graphics, really spelling it out (which, correct me if I'm wrong, but is actually the worst and slowest video solution that can be obtained anywhere).

Because they participate in an illegal and secret marketing agreement with Intel, to run AMD down in the budget sector (which was AMD's main/only market when this started), in return for close to free supply of cpus.

Because they routinely under balance video and memory specs, against a high cpu GHz rating, resulting in poor system value.

Because their systems often 'magically' emerge on the desks, of people, who originally had requested something else, and are poorly served by their "performance".

Because their systems are not good for tinkering with, due to lack of documentation and general support for proprietary hardware.

I'm also uncomfortable with that their quality is so overrated in the general public's mind. Though that is hardly a reason to "hate" them.
 
Aside from everything else that's been said, the cases seem pretty flimsy with all the plastic they put on it (at least on the family computer, a 2-year-old 8200). Not many drive bays for its size either. But this would probably go for many OEMs.

The only real problem I have with Dell is that they outsource their support to India. I have a REAL problem with that.

Dell is way to proprietary for me, but I have built my own for the last 5 years. I have ordered some parts from Dell in the recent past. When I had a problem and tried to contact them I was passed around and ended up on the other side of the world. I was transferred six times and could not understand the Indians that they outsourced their customer support to. I became increasingly livid each time as I had to explain my problem repeatedly. Finally, I was transferred to somebody in Texas who quickly solved my problem. End result, I won't do business with Dell anymore.
 
i hate dell because they keep coming out with better and better computers for less and less money.....

everytime a buy a computer it's outdated in 6 months!

they p!ss me off!!

actually, they are amazing.
the stuff you can get from them "on sale" makes it silly to build your own computer (other than for the experience of building your own, which everyone should do at least once in my opinion, if your a "geek").

 
I hate all the crap software they load your system up with.

I bought a Dell for my mom a few years ago; the first thing I did with it was format the drive.
 
I can't think of any reason to hate Dell. They make a quality product at a great price. Considering the fact that most PC users do not know anything about PCs, Dell is a perfect solution. I've recommended Dell and Gateway (before e-machine merger) to many for their home and business use PCs.
 
About 18 months ago I spent 8 hrs on the phone with people in India reading off scripts and they could never help me if they tried. It was very frustrating going through silly motions with the people on the phone that weren't remotely related to the problem.

I just spilled coffee on my Dell laptop. This time I contacted them online. They took sent Airborne to pick up the Laptop on Thursday and I had it back in my hands on the following Monday. I am very happy with this experience.
 
My wife's office has a bunch of Dells, and to be honest with you, they are all SLOW. Anything from a 2.2 celly to a 2.8 P4 - as long as they use them as typewriters - they are great. Try to do more than 2 things at once - Word, Qbooks, and on line - well, you just as well go get some coffee and come back later. Try to run an update - they have a few 800 duron/win98 combos that are a lot snappier.
 
My company has used nothing but Dell desktops for years. I really have not had any reason to complain about them. I had an old Dell monitor that went kaput and they replaced it with a 21" FD Trinitron because the other monitor was no longer available. Their server support can sometimes be lacking, but you can blame that on the outsourced 3rd party repair guys.
 
I don't like Dell, mostly because of the proprietary parts, the slick marketing of crappy machines, and the cheap flimsy plastic the entire computer seems to be made out of.

One thing that is good about dell are their monitors. I own a 17" ultrasharp I bought a month ago. It is an excellent monitor (thus far).
 
If I am going to spend over $500 dollars on something, I better have alot of choices. Since Dell is intel's bitch (or, what we refer to in marketing as a "business partner") I can't choose the AMD processor I want....
That and since they outsourced their call center to India, I hear their support has gone to crap.
Also... I like building my own. That way, it's... well.... mine.
 
gotta say that Dell rackmount servers are pretty crappy.

the one time I had to work with on, I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to pop the lid off, and then got frustrated and pried it off with a flathead screw driver.

as far as reliability goes, I guess they're alright, but they're a major pain to work with in terms of hardware.
 
Why hate Dell?

Their customer service sucks - you get routed to New Dellhi for ineffectual politeness. . . . no CSR takes any responsiblity for what they tell you.

Their notebooks are cheaply made . . . don't expect them to last under "normal" usage.

 
Well, let me tell you about my Dell experience. I bought a Dell laptop. It was an utter piece of junk. First impressions were not good either. It seemed there was an annoying compromise on every inch of the laptop. THe thing feels fragile. It's mother board got messed twice and had to be shipped for repair. There is no third mouse scroll button on mine, which is a major drawback. THe touchpad is not as responsive or communicative as other laptop touchpads. THe screen is good, but the latch cover mechanism is horrible. The power unit plug in (the plug you plug into the laptop) is of the long type, and occupies some space. My Dell experience is contrary to whatever the commercials say. I have an IBM laptop from the past, and it has been more reliable than this new Dell. The optical drive is shaky. The HD plugin to the bay is shaky. You get the feeling that some day it might fall apart. THe entire laptop feels fragile and hollow. Junk, utter junk. The worst part of it all is what they say in their commericals. Reliability, quality, .... nonsense. Time to look for something from IBM, Toshiba, COmpaq, HP, Sony, Fujitsu, Acer, and the rest ...... people who know how to make a quality laptop.
 
Why hate Dell? well my personal opinion is that ALL OEMs are alike. In most cases Dell is no better or worse than Compaq, HP, Sony, Gateway, eMachine or even the long forgotten Packard Bell, all of these OEMs have the same thing in common. On the mid and low end they are nothing more than functional computers that meet low and mid range use but provide little room for improvements/upgrades. Its only in the overpriced high end systems that you will find components that are not near/already out of date, and where true upgrade options exist.

All in all I like and hate all OEMs products equally. The one thing I do hate about Dell over all the other OEMs are the mindless ramblings of people that are convinced Dell is the only quality OEM out there.

The day I see people buying Dell motherboards to use in their custom built systems is the day I will admit Dell is better than any other OEM.
 
I like Dell, I have had very few problems with the systems I owned. I wouldnt buy one from them again because I build my own now, but I still recomend them if someone asks.

My famally has had several Dell computers, I had a laptop and a desktop both from dell, and my dad has a laptop. Both laptops still work fine, as for the desktop, i dont have it anymore, I upgraded and parted it out. On my desktop it was a great system, 1.3 P4, with RDRAM 600Mhz 256MB of Ram, a 40GB hard drive and an AGP Geforce 2 MX, The only bad thing about the system was the OS (Win ME). After the one year warrenty was up I started up grading the components, I added 1GB of 800Mhz RDRAM, 2 WD harddrives, even a RAID card, a Geforce 4 TI 4200, an Audgy 2 card, I even bought an adapter to convert 423 pin to 478 pin chips so i could upgrade the 1.3 to a 1.8. The only thing that did not get upgraded in that system was the motherboard and the PSU. The 1.3 Ghz P4 that was in it still works in a friends system running a a nice 1.5Ghz OC, along with the 800Mhz RAM, and the old sound card that came with the system.
