why hasn't there been looting and rioting in the HK protests?

Cuz they know China is waiting for any excuse to send in the military and have another tianamen square massacre. And that means Hong Kong becomes a militarized state. And don't go telling me China won't do that because of trade or their hurt image, they will because they believe they are powerful once again
 
So you mean that a country that tells it's citizens that our main cultural value is getting more stuff at any cost, that outright tells it's citizens that it is only a crime if you get caught, that shows them every day that if you have enough money you are above the law, has a problem with people looting when law and order breaks down?

My grandparents weren't in the country that condoned Tuskegee, and McCarthyism, and "separate but equal". Don't pretend for one second that 20th Century America was some sort of bastion of virtue and equality, because it wasn't.

Agreed. As long as people are the "polite protesters" then Beijing can't use force.

The good news for China is that the election isn't until 2017, so unless these people are going to protest for three years all they have to do is wait until the protests stop and then quietly do what they were going to do anyway. The news cycle will focus on something new before any world pressure falls on them.

And honestly- does China have a choice? If they allow real Democracy in Hong Kong what is to prevent that want from spilling into mainland China? This is a real threat to the entire power structure.

China always thinks long-term. In the hundred year plan I bet they want Hong Kong to fold right back into the rest of China. That won't happen as long as the people there think they deserve rights far above and beyond what the average Chinese person gets. They have to stay they course, and this will be all for show.

So you're saying these protestors in Hong Kong are racists because they're not burning their city down? That seems harsh.
 
Why weren't there riots in Occupy Wall Street? Same reason. They're all rich people protesting. NYC Rich Kids and Hong Kong Millionaires on the streets. Of course they don't want to die.

no riots, just destroying property, raping women, defecating and urinating on the streets, rampant drug use, is all.
but i don't have to tell you this. you live in NYC, after all.

looking back at the earthquake in japan a few years ago, amid utter chaos, there was no looting.
contrast that to hurricane katrina, we see people walking out with TV's and beer, clearly items vital to survival.

what is it about asian nations that allows them to maintain social order, whereas we can't?
