Got the original sticker on mine, its MSRP was right at $60k new. So picking it up for $30k with only 30k miles on it seemed like a sweet deal to me (aka why I don't buy new cars). I figure I'll resell it in about 5 years with 70-80k miles on it for around $20k. Not bad IMO. I know VW has its detractors, but I've owned a few through the years, and the only problems I've ever had were self-inflicted (ie from mods).

Sure, sounds like a bargain. Maybe next time you'll find a bargain on something with 50 mpg+. Time we all started making sacrifices, myself included. I'll honestly be lucky to ever convince my wife to give up her luxury cars.

Oops, see my edit above. Truth be told, the Audi was for my wife (although I paid for it ). As I work from home forever now, I don't really have a daily driver anymore. I still have my modded Mk6 Golf R in the garage, but it's barely driven anymore. My sacrifice has been driving less. I even walk to the grocery store most trips.

That’s why I went with an EV this time. Most of the decent ones start at luxury vehicle prices and basically are entry level luxury vehicles.

That being said we literally hit 49.9mpg over 25 miles yesterday in our V8 Suburban😱

I did a double take when I saw that on the trip computer. It made sense though because we had just driven 20 miles down the Smokey Mountains…it got 11 going up 😀

That's because Toyota is looking for the cheapest labor costs possible, and they know that they can pay off R's to give that to them. Meanwhile, the Prius demographic aren't necessarily known from being the shiniest tools in the shed.
BTW, I actually considered buying a Tacoma last year, but was shocked to discover during the test drive what an overpriced POS it is. Handling is appallingly bad for a newer vehicle, with ponderous body roll and massive understeer even at slower speeds, throttle response is terrible, the transmission acts like its allegeric to shifting, and the interior is ridiculously cramped (I'm 6'1" and my head hit the headliner while my knees hit the steering wheel). I walked away shaking my head that those things cost so much more than their competitors.

Not getting your Prius owners being stupid comment.

Isn't the current Tacoma like a 15 year old vehicle, and even then it was an update to what's basically the same vehicle for the previous 20? Its like the Jeep Wrangler, people buy it in spite of it not being a good vehicle for 99% of their use of it.

Yikes. I've loved my corollas and RAV4. I'll be eyeing a Prius next time

I think you can do better than a Prius. Toyota has let it languish badly and yet the price has not really been adjusted. Its not a horrible car, but I'd say look at the hybrid versions of the Corolla and Camry over the Prius.

I feel like Toyota really needs to update the Prius and segment it more from the other cars. I feel like they should make it into a 6 passenger wagon (with either front and rear bench seats or 3 rows of 2 seats) or small van (think Mazda MPV/5), something that slots below the Sienna, but offers the wagon practicality that the Corolla and Camry don't. That or just make it their compact electric car, something like the Bolt/Leaf but with more practicality than those offer (without going the beefier crossover/SUV route).

FWIW, everyone has different needs and expectations from their personal automobile. For me, 50 mpg sounds nice, but not at the cost of having a boring drive with less than 150 hp. I drive because I enjoy driving, and not just to get from A to B. And sure, not everyone has that luxury, I get it, but a new Prius can cost $30k. For a similar price, I recently picked up a gently-used 2015 Audi S4 with less than 30k miles on it. It's fully loaded, drives like a freakin dream, and gets 30 mpg on the highway even after a stage 1 reflash pushing it to roughly 450 hp (although granted, the mpg drops precipitously if you decide to actually use that power).

You can get 50mpg in the Camry Hybrid with 200hp. The Rav4 Prime is the quickest Toyota outside of the Supra.

I think you're really approaching this from the wrong angle. Which, good on you for driving less, but there's plenty of people that can't really do that but do 90% of their driving in city, and especially for short trips, hybrids are much better suited. We should have had even better ones, and most powertrains being plug-in hybrids.

If what people are looking for is an economical, environmentally-friendly car for mostly city driving, short trips and commuting, then they should buy an EV. That is perfectly suited for that task.
