Why hasn't Kazaa been shutdown?

Napster was shutdown but it seems as Kazaa is invulnerable or no one really cares. Probably the latter.

As far as I know, Kazaa network doesn't have a central server like Napster did. That means that it's pretty much impossible for it to be "shut down" per se.

Confused

Because they're using it to track down the P2P users and arrest them, silly.

(Team Two - move in while he's typing the reply. Stunguns only, no deadly force. Team One - Save the harddrive for evidence, torch the rest of the house.)

The RIAA is trying, believe me. Several lawsuits have been filed. I believe Kazaa is based in Australia but they are actually incorporated in some tiny island nation like Tuvalu or something that has no copyright laws (I'm probably screwing up some details here).

In any case, there is definitely a legal battle going on to at least try to shut them down, I know that much.

Of course, as others have said, it's p2p so it will be nearly impossible to eliminate it.

Because their server is on an island, the programmers are in the netherlands, and they have an office in Australia. They are so spread out, it is hard to take them down!😉

its cause the fukin rule. and dont wanna bend over to teh man. more power to them

also bedcause all their studd is over sees

They are being taken into court in California, I believe, because a judge ruled that their software allowed a significant amount of copyright violation IN California.
I think, anyway.

I see. So P2P isn't illegal?

Hmm... what is the answer to this? (at least in the US). I assume it's illegal, yet with all these ads touting mp3s and burning CDs, you almost get the impression it's not illegal.

Actually, I guess P2P concept isn't illegal, but sharing of copyrighted materials is, so no NEW laws were written addressing Internet and mp3s etc.?

yes kazaa is getting sued...however they countersued saying that the entertainment industry is being dumb not getting inline with todays technology...that being said, the government is cracking down on isp's to go after people who are sharing copyrighted material...comcast sent me a pretty nasty email about this

P2P is about as illegal as having a baseball bat. That doesn't mean that the things you can do with a baseball bat aren't illegal though...

I don't know why the music industry wastes millions of dollars trying to shut down these p2p networks. Why don't they spend the same money on making a huge database of good quality songs that you can buy for like $1 or $2 each. They could add some packages too. Buy 20 songs for $8 or something.

Or they could do something like let you choose which songs you want on a cd and they ship it to you. That way you can customize your cd's with quality songs. At least the company would make some money that way.

I actually got into a debate with someone over this...I probably have $2,000+ sank into my computer...pay $50 dollars a month for my cable modem...and spend hours trying to find good files...I would happily pay an extra 20 or so a month for a few movies or music files...maybe more

Is Usenet same as newsgroups?
Yep. I'm totally amazed the RIAA and other groups haven't sued any ISPs to take down their news servers yet. There is an astounding amount of copywrited material posted every day......or so I hear. 😉

If newsgroups ever got widely used, they would probably get shut down. Hell, look how long IRC has been up and running.
